Student body officers also will be on hand to answer questions and a program will be presented, he said. The open house is for all new freshman and transfer students . from Salt Lake and Logan areas to help them prepare for fall semester which begins with registration on Aug. 29. Other presidential open houses have been held this year in Seattle, Oakland, Los Angeles, Denver and Washington, D C, Mr. Howard noted. n PROVO OFFICIALS inspected a trench opened at the site of a proposed new five million gallon reservoir to assess the seismic potential of the site. From left to right they are, Jack Zirbes, city engineer; Wayne Hillier, city commissioner; Dean Wheadon, water superintendent; Bruce Kaliser, state geologist; Odell Miner, city commissioner and Ralph Rollins, consulting engineer on the reservoir site. The site, at about 380O North 1700 East, is in a potentially active seismic zone immediately east of the Indian Hills area and the city is involved in the most detailed geologic investigation ever undertaken for any city utility. State Geologist Studies Site state engineering geologist, is at the N. Bruce Kaliser, site with a Provo city back hoe operator cutting a long trench across the site. His intent is to study the possibility for seismic activity on the bench the city proposes to select as a site for a new gallon reservoir to service water needs of the northeast part of the city. assess seismic potential ever undertaken on a public utility in the city's history. The consulting engineers have indicated that the area the reservoir is planned for could suffer a moderate to servere earthquake of the magnitude that recently caused servere damage in California. do not These predictions preclude the site as being suitable for a reservoir, the engineers note, but they must be taken into account in the design. It has been suggested that the design include a channel to take water away from populated areas below the reservoir site if the reservoir failed in an WATERFORD, Conn. The trenching is being done to subsurface exploration made by Rollins, Brown and 'Gunnell, Provo's consulting engineers on the reservoir. The preliminary engineering report, based on an examination of surface geology and extensive drilling work, noted that the proposed site is in an area highly activity likely to seismic sometime in the future. Mr. Kaliser was invited by the city to comment on the report, and asked that the site be investigated further before a decision is made to use it for a reservoir. .City officials delayed the project almost a month so the state geologist could visit the site for what is expected to be a field investigation of the site. The current geological investigation is unprecedented for Provo. The current studies being made are more elaborate than any previously done for the city. They are more elaborate than almost any study made to When customer demand is misjudged and you find an advertised item "Sold Out," ask any Skaggs Drug employee tor , your "Rain Check," and it will be promptly handed to you.
