Show Thursday, August 8, Annette Anderson Becomes Bride of Gary L Ashton Overweight Stewardess Reinstated ordered LOS ANGELES (LTD federal A judge has Continental Airlines to reinstate a stewardess fired for being overweight, and raised the possibility of similar orders on behalf of 178 other stewardesses dismissed for obesity. U.S. District Court Judge. E. Avery Crary issued the order or? behalf of Carole E Gerdon. Miss Gerdon filed suit after she was fired in December, 1971, for being 14 pounds over the weight limit for her height. She had been suspended several times for being overweight, she said, sometimes by only a half pound. The Air Line Pilots Association, to which many stewardesses belong, joined the suit, asking that the weight' standards be ordered abolished as sex because their discrimination, purpose is to ensure that have attractive stewardesses figures. The judge refused to issue the injunction, but said he would review the program in six months. He said what concerned him was that 98 per cent of the airline's "flight attendants" are women and there should be more men in the jobs if continental's hiring practices are not discriminatory. But he agreed to a hearing Sept. 16 on cases concerning the other 178 Continental stewardesses suspended or fired for being too fat. There are several other court suits, and complaints by the federal Equal Employment Opportunities Commission, against other airlines, asking for abolishment of requirements that stewardesses be attractive.
