BONELESS POT V ROAST CHUCK STEAK This type of rock formation is common in several sections of the mountains east of Utah Valley. Contrary to what 1 many- - people - think, the formations have . Dr.' H. J. Bissell, nothing to do with the Wasatch-Faultgeology professor at BYU, says they were formed thousands of years ago when the rocks were at great depth and in a ROCK FOLDING ,b more, plastic state. Pressures folded the rocks In such a manner and then they were forced upwards to appear as we see them today. Such folding structures are common in the area, with some rocks showing more drastic" folds than those pictured. This photo by George E. Russell is of a familiar spot on the south side of Provo Canyon. 49c SWISSSTEAK "ZJ 1 69c DOZEN CHOCOLATE Last of Series on Wasatch Fault Utah In All Its Earthquake Country But Relax Recorded History No One's Been Really Hurt by One Is (Editor's Note: This is of two articles the second " dealing with the Wasatch Fault zone of Utah and its . background. The first ran in .Wednesday's Herald.) By VAL HESS Utah Valley is what geologists call a "graben." This is a valley that has been created by earthquake activity along two fault zones. Each fault has caused mountains to be pushed up, forming a valley between. The Wasatch Fault, of course, 7 has produced the mountains east of Utah Valley, but there is also .a fault zone along he western side of the area. It has been named the Utah Lake Fault Zone and extends from the east side of the mountains on tiie west side of Juab County northward and passes just east of West Mountain. It then passes under Utah Lake and near Saratoga and emerges then extends east of the Oquirrh Mountains west of Salt Lake City. Long, Long Ago All the on the activity Wasatch Fault is thought to have taken place within the last 25 million years, recurring time and time again. The latest movements occurred after Lake Bonneville receded, during the past 10,000 years. Thus the seashells that 'are commonly found in rock layers .at high altitudes in the mountains don't necessarily mean the water was that high, but that the mountains have J been pushed up since the ocean waters covered this J part of -- -- He also said that damage would not be limited to just along the fault. Many structures in the valley may be . damaged because they are built on a base of soft, jelly-lik- e Lake Bonneville clay that could be started moving by such a quake and topple any structures built ' in those areas. Or May Not An earthquake could come May tomorrow as a result of slipping along the Wasatch Fault or the numerous faults which extend "finger-like- " into the valley away from the mountains'. But it also could be hundreds of years before the fault slips sufficiently ' to cause a powerful earthquake. So, in the meantime, just relax and enjoy the beautiful mountains the Wasatch Fault rrvn MJI1W ch in the realization that in the more than 120 years of resident occupancy of Utah by humans, no lives have been lost due to earthquakes nor has anyone even been serious i ly injured. has created A key FARM If PORK & BEANS that erases may be the No. next innovation brought forward by typewriter manufac 4-8- 21 j I CRISP, JLHCY HEAD CABBAGE -- 9'- RADISHES LIBBY'S CREAM No. 303 L Qfor $100 I IGA EVAPORATED MILK 10 INCH TRIKES Chrome Fenders, Sidewalls $1A33 Reg. ' No More Dangerous Dr. Bissell says that many persons have indicated a hesi-- . tancy about living in Utah because of the many faults that are present in the area. But he asks the question, "Why is ' it .any more dangerous to live here and take a chance on an earthquake than to live elsewhere and take a chance of a flood, tornado, earthquake or other violent acts of nature?" He b'oea on to say, "We are probably as safe here, perhaps much safer, than most places in the world." ..' In fact, at one time five members of the BYU geology department had their homes located almost precisely along the fault line in eastern Provo. Two have since moved, not because of the fault but due to other reasons. . Dr. Bissell has also pointed out that the damage from a violent earthquake, if one should occur here, could be much less serious than troubles which would follow. . ... ' Utilities Vital The water supply for Provo - City, as well as electric power, comes into the city across the fault zone. Both these vital needs could be cut off in case of a violent earthquake. He indicated that the terrible fires that swept San Francisco - ' i - ' after the destructive earthquake in 1906 were made even more fierce by the fact that the water supply into the city had been cut and there was nothing With which to fight the fires.
