Both the tax cutif - Congress enacts it and the . expense account regulations will be applic able to the return which you 11 file next year on this year's income. Tor the average person, the most significant change in the tax rules during the past year is the requirement that every return carry the; taxpayer's "identification number!" The Internal Revenue Service1 is switching to automatic data processing equipment "electronic brains") to check tax returns, andjt is indispensable under this system for every taxpayer to have his own personal, permanent identification ? V-'V?- ;! ed ,number. If you already have a Social Security number as most Americans do that automatically becomes your taxpayer identification number. Be very sure, however, that you fill in that number correctly in the appropriate box on your tax return. That box has been there for years, and you presumably have been filling it in all along. But if you've skipped it in the past, don't do so this year, or youH be liable to a $5 penalty. Easy To Obtain If you don't have a Social Se curity number, you can obtain one for taxpayer identification pur's" poses by goingto your local post office. Social Security office or in terns! Beet Growers Have Big Year o is deciding which form to use in making out your return. There are two possibilities the short form, 1040A, and the long form Dlain 1040. ..'' You can use 1040A, which is a ' p jich card about the size of a bank 1962 check, if your income in met both of the following conditions. It totaled less than $10,000. It included no more than $200 e in dividends, interest or other 1. 2. non-wag- forms of income on which tax was not automatically with held by an employer. There's an additional little gim mick here that will be useful to many taxpayers who are eligible to use the short form: If your total income was less than $5,000, you can let the In ternal Revenue Service compute your tax, and bill you for it. Even if your own calculations indicate you owe Uncle Sam money, you need not send a check until IRS sends you a bill which gives you several weeks of grace. Figure Out Own Everyone whose income was ov er $5,000 whether using the short form 1040A or the long form 1040 must figure out his own tax, and if he owes more than he's already paid in through payroll deductions or otherwise, he must send a check with his return. Make the check payable to "Internal Revenue Service" and send it with your return to your district director of internal revenue.
