Aleek Wants to Know How University of Utah coach Bill Meek tried to pick up a pointer from BYU coach La Veil Edwards at the Beehive Boot Luncheon Monday at the Fort Douglas Club in Salt Lake. Meek wasn't seeking any special secrets in regards to offensive or defensive strategy. He has his own ideas on those things. Rather he was seeking scheduling strategy. Utah has a very tough schedule of nonconference games this year including Texas Tech, Oregon, and UCLA. BYU was originally scheduled to play Houston this year, which would have been a very difficult game for the Cougars, but the schedule was changed and the Houston game isn't on the agenda. When Meek heard BYU wasn't playing Houston he must have had some ideas about not playing some of his tough opponents. At any rate, that was the secret Meek wanted from Edwards. Edwards tried to explain by saying, "I have mixed emotions about the Houston game." He then paused, apparently thought about almost a sure loss, and then said, "No, I really don't." "I wanted to see the Astrodome. I've never seen it, (pause) but then we decided we could write for some pictures," Edwards added. "After we found out we weren't playing Houston we had to scrounge pround for an Uth game," Edwards said. Weber State eventually replaced Houston on the BYU schedule, and Weber's assistant coach Ralph Hunter, didn't even wince when Edwards said they had to "scrounge" for another game Edwards softened the word when he went on to explain that he was "very much in favor of playing Weber State. I've always been in favor of it." "Utah and Utah State are our best gates, and Weber State should be a very good gate also. Let's face it. There's a financial squeeze in athletics, and this looks like a good game financially," he said. The game didn't develop of because a apparently misunderstanding. A verbal agreement was reached, but contracts were apparently not signed or were lost. Houston went ahead and scheduled another game, and BYU didn't discover the problem until last year. Houston is still very much interested in playing BYU, and the two schools will probably play each other in the future. The racial issue was definitely not a factor in the scheduling problem. BYU-Houst- on 6 Coach Ralph Hunter, subsUtuting for coach Dick Gwin, Weber State's first- - year coach claimed that this year's Weber schedule was the toughest ever, but that be and his team were excited about meeting Utah State and BYU on the gridiron this season. Meek Continues can't afford to lose key people this season," continued Coach Meek, "the key for us will be how far we can go if we do suffer a key injury." Prsbably the player the Utes can least afford to lose is quarterback Don Van Galder. "If we lost him," the Ute coach explained, "then we only have two sophomores we can fall back on, or we can move Steve Marshall, an excellent player from the defensive team to the signal caller spot." The Utah gridders have a tough pre season schedule which opens with Texas Tech and includes Oregon and UCLA. "If we can hang in son there tough in our p re-sschedule without getting a lot of guys hurt then we will be in good shape " Coach Meek also felt that three or four WAC teams were capable of beating ASU, "and we are one of them." This no longer is the twilight of his career. It is closer to midnight. "I'm aware of it," he says, openly, candidly and without any alarm. "I'd have to be crazy not to be. I know I'm 42. not 22 anymore. Nobody goes on forever. Not many go this long. Stan Musial did. So did Ted Williams." Once before in his career Willie Mays had to peel off his uniform and suddenly quit playing. That was on May 24, 1952 when he was being inducted into the Army but that didn't hurt as much as it does this time because he knew he'd be coming back. Mays had been in the big leagues little more than a year then but he already had enormous appeal. When they took him out of the game that day at Ebbets Field in 1952. announcing that he was leaving for the Army, even the umpires, who rarely show any piiblic emotion, joined the fans in giving Willie an ovation. He Returns to Lead NL Mays missed almost two full seasons, then returned to the New York Giants in 1954 and batted .345 to lead the National League. He also hit 41 homers that year and 51 a year later. Willie has 660 homers so far and it is entirely conceivable had he not gone off to the army he have might hit. Only when people come to me average. 22 RBI's and 6 homers. For a man 42 that's not bad; and say 'you used to hit .300, now for Willie Mays, it's almost you're hitting .200.' They try to 'down' you all the time. I put embarrassing. One of the few people Willie those kind of people outta my generally heeds is Herman mind. "You wanna know the truth?" At the beginning addei to the Mets' coaching of the season they didn't think I could piay at all. I hurt my arm staff. "The reason I didn't quit are the second day of spring training these 25 guys." he says, looking trying to throw the ball too hard around the clubhouse at the other too quickly. It still hurts a little, but my knees are okay and so are members of the Mets. "There are a lotta young fellas my legs. My eyes? They don't on this club and I felt I could help bother me. It is safe to say no player in the "I'm not looking for any for not game today has given the fans as I'm charity. looking any pity. I don't need any. If I many thrills as Willie Mays has honestly felt they didn't want me since he came up to the Giants in around here. I could quit right 1951. Back in those days, he was the now, but I don't think there is that kind of feeling about me. I "Say Hey Kid" and his trade could be wrong but I don't think ! mark was running out from under his hat. "We have great speed on defense," he continued "with both of our defensive cads capable of running the 40 in 4 6." He also stated that with the graduation of last year's star signal caller, Tony Adams this year's effense would not be as "wide open." He stressed that the Aggies will still throw the ball, but that the running game will also be stressed. Weber State's assistant coach Ralph Hunter stated that this year's schedule is the toughest ever for the Wildcats. He I expressed concern about playing BYU in their tenth game of the year. "We hope we still have a football team when we meet BYU, " he stated.
