This is the newly built lake opened for the first time last, year and really productive last summer. Much more water in the lake now-anthis is another one to watch as the fish put on growth and the water drops as the season goes along. Oh yes, for you who haven't been there it is situated north of Yruitland some ten miles on the drainage of the same name, Red Creek. Fruitland is just beyond! the Current Creek crossing soon after you leave the Strawberry Valley, on the way to Vernal and you turn north at the crossroads by the old store. ' Understand the fishinr is still better than fair on our old ' backdoor pond, Utah Lake. Bill Jeff ry reported taking both cats and walleyes bait fishing with crawlers. He followed the old Mud Creek channel as he boated back into the "south east corner of Prove Bay. Fished the newly flooded area in 2J4 to ?: feet of 3 d - - ' r i :::::'.:::::: Last week's roundup brought many questions anent "how do you figure the fishing will get better as the season ; goes along?" In brief here are some of the reasons: First let us say this is a safe assumption nearly any given year if you except opening weekend of the annual trout derby when the carry over trout and the planters are less wary and more suscept ible to the hook. This year even the opening days were relatively slow and this bodes even better for the prediction because the fish were there' and it leaves many more yet to be caught. A good water year and late runoff meant high and rising tables, cold water and late food growth. It also meant that the available fish had a much' greater amount of living space, were less; concentrated and wouldn't see a book as frequently even if they Were on the feed. Kinda like putting a hundred cows in the pasture or in the corral. Certainly easier, to "rope" one when they are confined to the smaller living space of the corral. ; . Another thing; we take considerable stock in is the old nxiom that fishing is usually poorer when water tables are on th rise. That is, best returns usually come to creel when the water is dropping-- or the table at least, static. The axiom applies to both lake and stream but is most pronounced on reservoirs subject to greater- - fluctuations in water levels. In our book this accounts for the advanced season type fishing common to spring creeks, lakes and the like not subject to heavy runoff waters and. fluctuations A prime' example would he Fish-lak- e where the return is relatively consistant 'through the Season, and where we experienced about a normal opening this year. On the other side of the coin reservoirs subject to heavy drawdown filled- - this year, the water now just beginning to drop and really warm up. Count Deer Creek, Scofield and a host of others the like .cf which we all know In this group. You can bet when they begin to reach "corral" size they will be more productive. True enough, we all go fishing whenever time and opportunity allow and creeling a lot of fish is secondary to the fun of getting out.-Ayou can catch fish any time of the year you're willing to work at it. But if he couldn't go any other time than the first month of fall most of your old timers would choose this period of the year. Water's lower, less, competition, and fish on the feed as they instinctively fatten up for the long, cold months ahead. r Afffl, in tuning is Do una to pret better as tnis season roes along.-Mucbetter this good water year than during those Just when the table was down. past Out to Redj Creek Reservoir the other day and the fishing! wasn't fast Did pick up four rainbow at about half pound each.
