This form of illumination and advertising has become so popular that it can be seen all over the world. What is neon and how are the signs made? Neon is a gas. In every 5,000 parts of air there is one part of neon gas. Even though it occurs in such smaE amounts, neon is taken from the air and used in electric signs. In 1898, Sir William Ramsay and M. W. Travers, English chemists, distilled liquid air and found a small residue left. This gas they called- "neon," meaning "the new." Neon Is a gas that has neither color, taste, nor smell. It is one of the "inert" gases. Like helium and other heavier gases, neon will not unite with any other element and for that reason is found only in the " - free state. A neon lamp contains this gas through which flows a current of electricity. As this current, which consists of moving electrons, moves through the gas the electrons collide with gas atoms and impart some of their energy to the atoms. Now electrons normally circulate around the nucleus of the atom. But when the collision takes place, some of them are dislodged from their usual positions. Atoms which contain sUch disturbed electrons are said to be in the "excited state." After a brief period, the excited atoms . lose their extra energy and snap back into their normal positions. Each time this happens, a bundle of light is produced and emitted. The light that is given off is a reddish-orang- e glow. Like any red other rays, these rays can thick fog and atmospenetrate phere more easily than other types of light. By adding very small amounts of mercury, a light blue color can be obtained. By using different combinations of rare gases, such as helium and argon, with neon, signs4 in all colors are possible. FUN TIME The Riddle Box 1.
