Show 7 14 WEDNESDAY, OCT. 11, 1961 Utah Ccrun!ty, Utah DAILY HERALD State Land Board Urged To Act On U rgen t Matter SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) The Utah Land Board was advised Tuesday by a group of university experts that it must start acting now on many urgent matters. ' The experts, retained to study specific problems by the board, said it has several things it must do. These included: Selection of 577,opo acres from the public domain as indemnity. Deciding which lands to hold for range management: and what lands to sell. Managing the surface and sub- - surface rights on 2,700,000 acres presently owned by the state, another 327,000 acres for which it "owns only mineral rights and the 577,000 acres which it will select. The Institute of Renewable Natural Resources, Utah State University,, tola the board it had developed guides for determining which lands to select and which to sell. It also listed the general areas where the board might look for lieu Dr N.K. Roberts of the institute told the board that in many cases the state would earn more money by selling surface rights and investing the 'money rather than continuing to lease the land. The Bureau1, of Economic and Business Research, University of Utah, reported that it had gathered public land information so the board could get reliable information on land selection. The third agency, the University of Utah's Colleges of Mines and " Mineral Industries, was engaged By ROBERT STRAND to prepare a geologic map to guide United Press International the board, in selecting mineral SAN , FRANCISCO (UPD Santa lands. Fe Railwayjs plans for the Western Pacific Railroad were questioned today during Interstate Commerce Commission hearings Stevenson Says: to determine the future of West( -- land-selectio- ns. 1 Santa Fe's Plans for W.P. Questioned ern Pacific ' Santa Fe and Southern Pacific are seeking control of the smaller company,, and some parties id the -- case believe WP should remain en independent line. Attorneys opposing Santa Fe control sought admissions Tuesday from Leo C. Hudson, a Santa Fe official, that the firm's self interest might require diversion of, traffic from the Utah to the Arizona gateway. Santa Fe now advertises its ability to send freight "all the way with Santa Fe" from San Francisco to Chicago via Arizona. Opponents claim that it would avoid shipments on Western Pacific lines on the midcontinental route through Utah because it then would be required to split revenues with other railroads. Hudson admitted under that his firm would d as much on earn only on as traffic via Utah shipments via Arizona. The statement came in response to questioning by Martin Cassell of the Rock Island Railroad, which composes a section of the midcontinental route. But Hudson said that railroads designate the routing "of less than one per cent" of freight. He said routings are specified by Fhippers' own traffic departments. When asked how many routings were "carrier influenced," Hudson replied, "As a wild guess, I would say maybe 10 per cent." He admitted that railroads place some restrictions on routings originating in their own territory, but said1 this was not the on transcontinental ' routes. Hudson also , faced questioning by Charles W. Burkett, a Southern Pacific attorney. SP would control all railroads in the Western Pacific area if it wins control cross-examinati- on one-thir- -- practice of WP. Burkett tried to trap Hudson Into saying that shippers get just as good service when one railroad dominates, an area as when rail competition is present. Burkett asked Hudson if Santa Fe rates and service at Albuquerque, Roswell, Carlsbad anrLLas Cruces, N.M., would be better if another railroad served the points. "I couldn't say," Hudson said. Earlier, a Cambridge, Mass., consultant refused to be budged from a forecast that Western Pacific tonnage would exceed its World War H peaks by 1970. Dr. Cyril C. Herrmann, appearing for Santa Fe, sustained Santa Fe's contention that there is plenty of room for rail competition in West.' the Southern Pacific has introduced a study to show that truckers doubled their business in 1948-5while rail tonnage increased only slightly. . fast-growin- g 0, U.S. Planning No Action Against Cuba UNITED NATIONS, N.Y. (UPI) Foreign Minister Raul Roa charged in the U.N.'s General Assembly Tuesday that the United States was training "mercenaries" for; a new invasion of Fidel Castro's island country in Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and the Panama Canal Zone. He said the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and "counterare smuggling revolutionaries" , explosives into Cuba to carry out sabotage and stage uprisings. He charged that there was a plot to assassinate Castro and his brother, Raul, and said this was "open proof of the sinister intrigues" of Washington. "The Cuban foreign minister seems to hold the Communist belief that repetition establishes validity," U. S. Ambassador Adlai E. Stevenson retorted. Declaring that the United States is not planning action against Cuba, Stevenson told the assem bly: SALT LAKE CITY (UPD Trial of a former County employe on misuse of public funds opens this morning in Third District Court. Ski Facilities lantic about 1,750 miles southwest of here, is known as the "loneliest island in the world." The volcanic island was ' the home of a British weather station and had a population of 241. Canning and fishing were the island's main enterprise. Since August, the island largest of a group of three far from any continent had been experiencing severe tremors. Monday, its 6,760-fovolcano, extinct for several thousand years, started spewing rocks and molten lava. The residents fled their settlement at the foot of the volcano. They spent Monday night in po--. tatj patches two miles away. Tuesday they returned to a beach and were met by two fishing boats stationed there the Tristania and the Repetto. The boats took the 241 residents and 25 visitors through stormy seas Tuesday to Nightingale Island, about 20 miles away. Island administrator Peter Wheeler radioed Cape Town that the refugees showed "admirable calm". The refugees spent the night out in the open on desolate, wind swept Nightingale Island as they awaited the Dutch ocean liner Tjisadane to pick them up. A few have volunteered to remain and try to get back to Tristan De Cunha to see what is left of their settlement homes. Late Tuesday night, radio reports from Sir Nicholas Copeman, British commander-in-chie- f of the South Atlantic, who was aboard one of the fisliing vessels,' indicated that the volcano was still furiously erupting. "The whole eastern half of the island is cracking," he said. "The volcano is pushing up one hundred and fifty feet of flaming lava, although nothing is flying out. It is an amazing sight." ot To Increase At Utah Resorts Utah skiing facilities will be increased this season when three new lifts and five new jumps go into operation. The new lifts will be located at So'itide in Big Cottonwood panyon Snow asin in Ogden Canyon and Beaver Mountain in Logan Canyon. Also under construction is a new lift at Alta, planned for com pletion next year. Solitude has a gondola lift in the planning stages, with completion set for 1964. In addition to lifts, Solitude has three new ski jumps opening this season, while Alta will open two new jumps for juniors and inter- mediates. . -- Zinc Production Up 11 Per Cent .WASHINGTON (UPD-T- he U.S Mines said today .that production of zinc by U.S. mines increased 11 per' cent in August to 39,000 tons.
