Show ON THE RECORD Single Hits Subsidize The Classical LP's' K ' ! I - 1 -- . s 'FBISfory' Set Sunday ! 1 s The story of a revolution in' crmwnology and Jaw wiH be rehroadcast on "The Twentieth Century" Sunday, September U, on Channel. 5 at 4:30 p.m. The documentary, written by Don Whitehead, author of the bes selling book "The F.B.I. Story, shows how and why the F.B.I, was founded, how k operates, and what " it has accomplished, "F..I., ; NEW YORK (NE4) It's things like Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" that make things like Chopin's 'mazurkas V.. ; possible. This is oversimplifying the problem, but basically it's true. And David Kapp speaks from first-han- d experience with both. His Kapp d, Records release of the hew hit novelty, sung by young Brian has suddenly become one of the fastest breaking, records in : r: - i 1 x Hy-lan- V " recent years. . "We make single records like this," says Kapp, "so we can afford to make classical records, like pianist Ann Scheinn playing Chopin. The single hits, for a firm like ours, really subsidize the classical LPs." The economics of the record business is changing. For the first time, 1960 will see more LPs sold than singles not merely a greater dollar volume, mind you, but more ' records, unit-fo- ! i S f V. 1 v -- Pi ) , : COLOR COLOR ... x r unit. Breathes So Much Life -- ' Yet LPs are expensive to make. Kapp says it costs around $8,500 to make a Roger Williams LP "and that's before we've paid Roger anything." Of course, Williams' albums make it back quickly. But other albums don't. A small firm cahriot Roger Williams afford to take a licking on an LP release, even if it enhances its prestige, so it must make the money back somewhere. Teenie-Weeni- e Enter "Itsy-Bits- y Yellow Polka Dot Bikini," and INTO A PORTRAIT; mi REDMAN'S AMERICA Dr. Ruth Underhill, professor of anthropology at the University of. Denver, presents a vivid picture of the way of life of a number of Western Tribes in "Redman's. America," a series of 13 half hour programs from National Educational .Television. The series covers such things as- social customs, early history, activities; and the changes resulting from contact with the white man. This series will be seen on Channel 7, Tuesdays at 9 p. m., beginning Sept. 13. $ v' r Another proWem with this flood of LP, releases is ki the very 3,000 quantity" itself. Kapp estimates the industry turns out between ' and 4,000 albums a year. , "And the record business," he says, "is the only one where the retailer usually doesn't know what he's selling. Can you imagine a oar dealer not knowing aU about the car he's selling? But a record dealer simply hasn't time to listen to every new release, so he just doesn't know." The problem for a manufacturer, therefore, is to attract attention. Kapp (the man and the company) does this by thinking no new ideas. He has an album coming, for example, which wiW be the first band album recorded ki the marching tempo of the Big Ten marching bands. For Kapp, who started his own firm after a long career with Decca and RCA six years ago, ail this means the end of a dream. He'd wanted "a small firm," so he could have the fun of being in the business he 'loves without worrying about bigness. He's decided it can't be done, and, despite sM his efforts, Kapp keeps getting bigger and bigger. , And that, of course, is because the record business gets bigger and bigger. Not every pianist can be an accompanist. Especially, most of the great soloists have problems when they're called on to accompany (120-eadenc- e) snsingerr Diahann Carroll - rrlgian k Son,H larrkjg Pat O'Brien in a new series of programs offering an entedtaindng.and realistic study of a lawyer father and son in their personal and professional lives, will debut on the ABC-TNetwork, Friday, Oct. 7.
