It's going to be another battle between Brigham Young and Texas-Paso for the WAC track and fiile title this season. If the first outdoor meet of the year is any indication, the Cougars and Miners will be the ' teams to beat in the '72 season k El that is just now getting underway. Both teams looked powerful in a quadangular meet staged in Tempe, Ariz., over the weekend. And if the Cougars remain up front, BYU can thank a com-- . bination of newcomers and veterans for the effort. At least, such seems to be the case following the Y's first outdoor appearance of the season. This was Cummings' first outdoor meet in his freshman year, and only two other runners in BYU history have better times than this. In fact, Cummings' run at Tempe was many seconds faster than the best BYU effort of last season. Another freshman making his first appearance in the blue and white was Richard George, who threw a 238-- 1 in his first meet this season. The throw was good for fourth place. George managed to finish ahead of teammate Raimo Pihl who had a best of 220--5 in the Tempe meet. t In other impressive vaulter performances, pole Richard Yates tied for third with a 15-- and Siguard Langeland triple jumped One of the big surprises at Tempe was Anders Arrhenius, the Cougar shot putter who beat a select field of stars with a 64-- 4 put that was the best effort of the afternoon. Fla. PETERSBURG, (UPI) Ballplayers are always so beefing about something nobody really takes them too seriously. Joe Morgan's complaint is unusual though. It's a legitimate one, and it's not with his new club, the Cincinnati Reds, but with his old one, the Houston Astros. "I've been reading where they claim I was a 'bad influence' on Jim Wynn," says Cincy's new second baseman. "They say I was responsible for him hitting .203 last year, but what they don't say was that I was with him seven years and six of them were good ones. Jim had 37 home runs and 107 RBIs one year. Another year he had 33 homers and 87 RBIs. They don't say I had anything to do with that, but when he hits .203, they say I hit .202 of it. That sure makes sense, doesn't it?"
