' Sharing their experiences and partaking of their values of life is Lucy Bro ugh Lucy Carter Brough is the youngest of these wonderful women. She was born three weeks after James A. Garfield took office as president of the United States, in 1881. As a young lady she taught Religion Class. This was a class sponsored by the L.D.S. Instead of the usual two rooms to start out in, Lucy was lucky enough to have four rooms in a log house in the East part of town. She has always enjoyed house plants and going to church when she nas able. Although her is Mrs. Ray Hall daughter to her attentive mother, very Lucy is still independent and prefers to be in her own home. She celebrates her 90th birthday today. Elsie Sldwell On Mar. 9, Elsie Sidwell was honored by her family on her 90th anniversary. She was born in 1881 in Visbory, Jylland, Denmark. She came with her family, first to Wisconsin, then to Utah at the age of 16. William McKinley was president and Utah had hist been admitted into the Union the previous year. Her first Utah home was Mt. in Pleasant. Later she lived Knightville and then Nephi. M St field his has written and mailed a letter to him every Monday morning. That is over 75 letters that she has sent him in less than ltt years. Ninety years old you say? That is a task few young people ever even think about She was married to Gideon Sidwell in 1900; was a member of the Fourth ward choir for 31 years and has been an officer and teacher in all the auxilary orgcnizations of the L.D.S. Church. She received the first Honorary Golden Gleaner award in Juab Stake and was still attendance secretary for the LD.S. Girls program after she was 85 years old. Besides her diurcr- - work she has server in the Service Star mission this ih; in New n air-oa- heart-warmin- g. organization and became attracted to this pretty girl. They rere married Feb. 2, 1911. like other young couples of day they rode the Sanpete train to Manti to be married in the IDS Temple and then returned to great-grandso- Zealand and then found out she didnt have an J stamp on hand. For the 17 months this has been in the er keen memory and well dressed appearance would never let any one know she was born in a log cabin back in 1830. Her home, most of her married life, is within two blocks of the place she was born. Jan. 13, 1903 she and her sweetheart, T.H. Burton, went to Salt Lake on the train in the afternoon and stayed at her grandmothers home that night. The next corning they caught the city bus and went to the temple to be married. After the temple session they hurried to the train again to come home. When they arrived back in Nephi they took stock of things and had just 35 cents left to buy their first groceries. Her mother had woven two strips of carpet that they sewed together and put on her kitchen f oor. (Two rooms at Grandma Lurton's) Her father gave her the usual prize wedding present, a milk cow! In the later organization she has held all offices in the local organization and also served as state president., treasurer and board member. Besides being the mother of 5 children she has had 10 foster daughters live in her home. Polly Broadhead Most young girls used to work in homes to help out when new babies came along. Polly Jennings was work; g for the Broadhead families, that lived ' at Four Mile Creek south of Nephi. When one baby was old enough for her to leave it was time for the other family to have a new one and so Polly stayed on until all the family used to joke with her about working 7 years for Hyrum. Like many young girls today she fell in love with a man with a bushy musta&e. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple after the usual train ride, and then moved into two room of his folk's home at Four Mile. They had nine children, all born on the ranch before they moved into Nephi. Polly was always very practical and nothing was ever . wasted. Old clothes were put into quilts and rugs. She was very artistic and would look at a hat in a millinary store wiadow and go home and trim one like it. Perhaps the same hat was redecorated two or three times before it was finally discarded. Something she remembers as being very enjoyable was the old sleigh rides, in a bob sleigh, behind a team of horses with sleigh bells tinkling in the frosty 'e v -- V r . At the present time Mrs. Broadhead is at the Colonial Manner Convelesant Home in Nephi. Her 94 years are beginning to be noticeable but she u still very ?lert and charming. $. in air. Alice McCnne It is now six months since Mrs. Alice McCune celebrated her 100th birthday. Her family have moved from Nephi and she is at the present time at a Rest Home in St. George, near her oldest daughter. Mrs. McCune says she is surmized that she has lived for a century but as long as she is here she will make the best of it She still reads and studies the scriptures; is very alert, enjoys intelligent discussions on current events and faithfully reads the daily paper. Somedays she finds it lonelv as all of her friends that she first knew have passed on, as well as many relatives. Mrs. McCune has been active in music circles throughout her lifetime. She was still serving 83 Relief Society ward chorister at the age of 91.
