Herrick, and the choir sang the hymn, "SweetEl-is 'l iiy work, my 'od, my King." der C. W. TcnroF called on the Lord an! the hymn "Praiie yo the Lord" was delivered by the choir. During the administration of the Sacraroent, the Clerk of the Stake presented the and GeneralAuthoritiesoftheC'hurch those of tht Weber Stake of Zien. The nominations were all unanimously sustained and lc' ELDER W ili'OKU woeuBL'vr addressed the congregation whioh wan exceedingly largo. Elder Wood ruff took up the subject of emigration to Arizona. He eaid that all our labor of settling Southern Utah and Arizona had been acccinplinhed under great difficulties, many people even despairing of the possibility ol redeeming the apparently sterile noil. Brother Eldredge hi nself, when sent on a mission hither, went and reported back that "the country about .St. George Uood all up edgewise." Now St. George is a very garden ol Edan, producing excellent fruit. There the Church has erected a Temple in which as many as 100,000 baptisms hive taken place. Difficult also was the first settling of Arizona, the first mission thither returning unsuccessful. Butotheis were sent and now they have flourishing settlements. However forbidding a country may look to us, we can never find a country more unpromising than Utah looked on the 121th of July, 1847, when first entered by the Tioneers. Lot Smith was sent South and he succeeded in establishing settlements. There are Sunset and Brigham City, on the two banks ol Little Colorado Hirer. Eldor Woodruff then gave a description of the country and how he found it himself. When he went up the Little Colorado River, below Sunset, he found it dried up for about 50 miles; but when they got up to Sunset they lound water enough to run a gristmill all the year round nd to irrigate 1,000 acres. There also was a sufficiency of timber, as near hh one mile from Sunset. 'I he country whs one field of bunch grass, for mil's and miles around, forming an excel lent herding ground. The people of Sunset and Bngham bait organised in the shape of forts. They iived in United Order, each settlement for itself. They had fine herds ot cattle, both in the forts and on a dairy in a fertile valley, called Pleasant alley They raiseu an tunas oi grain in abundance and of good quality. In the San Francisco mountains is :i fine forest of timber, from 0 inches to 4 feet thick and ."0 to 130 feet high. St. Joseph is 25 miles up the river; '2b miles further is Woodruff: 2'i miles more, up the river, is another place, and several more in the vicinity. The Little Colorado River furnishes ample water for all purposes. Sunset once looked very unfruitful; now only 11 men and boys were employed at farming, harvesting thousands of bushels of wheat and com, the finest ever seen in the West. The Litter-daSaints there are able to uitain themelves from the products f the work of the soil. The United Order is working most harmoniously. no swearing, drinking or quarreling going oh. The Order shows most ex cellent fruits of union, peace, all the people showing the greatest willing n ess to obey the authorities ami pay tithings and donations. Elder Wood ruff then treated of St. John, the county seat of Apache ceunty, where formeily all bad elements of the outside world would congregate Jews, Gentiles, Mexicans and others. The Church now has bought the land around there and emigration is wished to secure possession. A good man is placed iu authority as Bishop, ft man who does right and just. Men are needed to g- - there to help settle the place which is the key to the whole of Apache county. About 1200 families are required, as it is a large country, peopled by many thousan Is of the Laraanites, located in villages, all except the Navajos and Apache. These Lamanites are waiting for the Latter-daSaints to come and administer to them. The Church wants to settle Arizona, New Mexico, and a whole chain of settlements into the very heart of Old Mexico. St. John is a very good place for farming, the Little Colorado River How in 2 directly through it; there is even a natural dam of stone which enables the people with little trouble and labor to irrigste their lands. About 30 f ami-liare desired out of this Stake to go to St. John. But there is to be no compulsien about it, all aie to be free about it. Those called upon to go must consider their interest. Trest. Taylor does not want to oppress the people or to call them to go against their will. All who like to go, with williDg hearts and ready minds are expected to avail themselves of the opportunities. There is one fine stretch of land there, called the Colorado Meadows, from 15 miles long to 3 or 4 miles wide. Eider Woodruff wished the brethren o consider the matter carefully and llioo who are disposed to go and hand ia their names to the President and set rrmlv as soon as possible, as it is a long journey, of about 700 miles. The Latter day Saints want an .cm let to the South and the speaker hope that we will obtain a foothold in the country o Mexico. There itre tern thousands of the pure blood of Lehi down there, whose minds aic open and eagerly awaiting the cum Saints. The ing of the Latter-daNavsjos are our special friends and many have bren converted and baptised. Elder Woodruff then endorsed the remarks made in the forenoon by Elder Joseph F. Smith, aLout the intents of the hearts of wan. He ould never oppress or oppose any y es ' r-- i whatever he pleased. The Lord Himself never forced any one to belief. He has placed good and evil, faith and unbelief before the children of men and they can exercise tbeir own free ageney. Such is alro the spirit of the Constitution of the United States which guarantees full religious freedom to all. Another important point is the redemption of the dead. This is a momentous weight. There subject me millions and millions in the i(.irit world, for w hom a work has to be accomplished. It takes just as mueu to have a deail man as it t kes to save a live one. Great responsibilities are resting upon us, hidoa work f r our numerous religions in the spirit world. The speaker then gave a touching description of the tender relations be tween children and their mother and showed how treat is ourrefpou sibility towards our fathers and our fathers' houses. Elder Woodruff himself has been baptized 3,000 times tor o'.lier peojJe. which should be This will be c.i example to others. and joy for him; i great consoNtion .o it will be to all the Saints who have done the proper work for their progenitors and other kin. In the spirit world we will only be privileged to unite with those of our friends whom we have redeemed while in the flesh, hence we shuuld eagerly avail ourselves of the glorious opportunity of the great and mighty work. The work of building temples is a great and urging one. It is worth more thn all the gold and silver we may obtain. There is no money in apostatizing, or committing any sin. If there is any clorv, it is in men who will stand up in defense of the Gospel of Christ and when tr mUsa lomewill be found valiant chaiiij ions on ,the watch towers of Zion. In such men Elder Woodruff glories, as in Elder Josoph F.Smith, the aon of the martyred Hyrum. He is able to preach the gospel ol temperance, because he himself lives it snd he nobly fills the exalted position to which he has been called, and will one day even occupy the highest. lhe sneaker concluded with a pow erful testimony to the great bless ings emanating trom the temples erected to the name of the Most High, and an impressive exhorta tion to the Saints to be solicitous and saner in the fulfillment of all the duties devolving upon us, attending to their prayers, for then the Lord would continue to prosper and protect the people in peace and plenty. Wherever one of the Twelve resides, his authority is paramount to all local authorities of any Stake. Thus the Presidency of the Weber Stake of Ziou are to consult Apofctle F. D. Richards, first ami lore uot, before any other man or set of mea in the Stake, for as one of the Twelve Apostles he is a president over the Presidency of the Slake. Likew;a it is the duty of the President and counsel of the High Priests to b- - subject to the Presidency of the Stake, as they are to place themselves in ac cordance with the counsel of the Twelve Apo .ties, who are a general presiding high counsel over all the Church, in and out of Zion. It is also right and proper that the First Presidency and the Twelve Apostle respect and honor a I the local to a very deacon. The teachers who go round the firesides, as servants of God, are entitled to the defence and respect ot tiie highest general authorities. If we would cease to place so much importance upon things of the world, we would be able to settle our temporal affairs a m out.' ourselves with much more ease. The speaker then referred to a man who said he had faith in Joseph Smith, but alno in the indestructibility of tho Govern ment ef the Lnited Mate, hucu a man is next door to apostacy. All the law and the prophets hri.iii.on the precept of lov;n? tbe Loid Ij ret and foremost and then our neighbor as ourselves. As long as we place money above God, we will be in hot water all the time; it it putting the cart before the horse, placing that which is dros and refuse above what is beyond price and value. Millions and millions of dollars will not secure a man against the voice of God call ing hits home. But the man who has devoted his mind and time to the kingdom of God, has laid up treasures in Heaven where moth and rust do not assail, nor thieves break through. The sneaker closed with a prayer that we might at all times be governed by the spirit ot uoa ana not by the spirit of the world; and that the Saints might be one, stand ing together in union and harmony. Counselor L.J. Herrick adjourned Conference for three months and after the performance of an anthem by t he choir and benediction by El der Chas. W. Penrose, the audience slowly dispersed, richly edified by the valuable counsel given by the servants of God. "THE WASP." 45 rearsbefore tJier'S'Jlic- THE GENUINE DR.
