Bennett Mr. C. is Interviewed at Chicago. Mr. C. W. Bennett of Salt Lake City, one of the legally elected delegates to the national convention from Utah, arrived and registered at the Pnlinr House, Chicago, Saturday. Mr. Bennett was called upon by the Inter Ocean representative, who asked for a correct statement of the Utah difficulty, and an explanation of the way in which the contesting delegations from Utah were appointed. Mr. Bennett replied: Briefly the explanation is this: On the 3rd of April the Territorial Committee held a meeting at whicjh were present five of the eleven members, in person, and six by proxy. Of the latter two were fiom commits teemen who had removed from the territory two years before, and two from committeemen who had removed from the counties for which they were appointed and in nowise represented their constituencies. This left but seven regular mem. bers of the committee in the meeting. The call for the meeting was issued by Mr. McBride, chairman of the committee, and a member of the national committee, I understand, but do not know how true it is, that McBride's promise to SEND BLAINI DELIU ATKS from Utah to the national convention, was a part of the compact by which ne was made a member ot the committee lour years ago. It is generally thought in Utah that the Central Pacific Railroad had some thing to do with the action of the stale committee. In the call for the committee meeting, there was no notice that they would attempt to elect delegates or the sheme would have been frustrated by the people. 1 was a member of the committee, but was temporarily absent from Salt Lake, and on the 12th of March I telegraphed McBride asking him to call the convention for the 20th of April. He paid no attention to my telegram, but at the committee s, meeting proceeded to choose and selected J. V. M. Silva and Presley Denney, both pronounced Blaine men. As soon as this unfair and unprecedented action of the committee became known, a general call for a state convention wag made by the republicans of the Territory. There are only about 1,500 or 1,800 republicans in the Territory. The call was made and signed by over 500 oi the most prominent republic cans, fully representing the sentiment of all. The call was thoroughly published, and primaries were held in all the principal counties where there is any republican vote, and forty-eigdelegates to the convention were chosen. The proceedings of the convention dele-gale- ht WERE REGULAR AND HARMONIOUS, and myself and Mr. E. A. Thomas were appointed delegates to Chicago, with E. P. F'erry and C, W. Emerson We were not instructas alternates. ed, but it was understood that we were both pronounced Grant men. We are the only regular delegates representing the republicans of Utah and there can be no question about the right of our admission." "Will your colleague, Mr. Thomas, be present?" "I am not certain. I received a telegram from him yesterday, saying that he thought he could not arrive here in time for the convention. If he does not arrive, his alternate, Mr. Emerson, a Grant man, or a regularly credentialed proxy will represent him. Mr. Ferry, alternate for myself, is a brother of Senator Ferry, of Michigan, who is understood to be a supporter of Blaine." "Did the fraudulent committee take any proceedings to substantiate their claim for recognition ?" "No; I suppose they will attempt to 'bulldoze' their way through. At their meeting the members of the themselves for committee another four years, perpetuating heir own organization without any convention or the action or choice of the republicans of the territory." BUCHMILLEK& WELLS. Oudex, Juno 1st, 1880. dje2Iw FOREIGN NOTES. ao7-i- y B. E. Editoub Junction: As 1 am in the bee business, I wish to give a sketch of my experience in that line of busineas. My father in my native land kept bees, and about the year 1870 1 bought a stand of bees, and the same summer I increased them to seven and got fifty pounds of honey. The bees all were wintered out of doors, by placing the hives close together and nailing up a back to post set in the ground on the north and on the east. On the top of the hiyes I laid boards to keen them dry, and iu front of the hive I laid boards to keep the sun off. Bv this the bees keep in the hive and do not waste away, tor the bee is one of the seven sleepers in winter and should not be induced to leave the hive by heat er any other excitement till the snow is gone. After the cold weather the boards in front and on the back should be removed, and the hives moved in a working position about fifteen inches between the hives. If they sre too close the queen bees of the hives are liable to kill one another. If (he stands are lower than two feet from the ground, the toads and ants will trouble them;if they are under trees and too much in the abide, the bees are wounded by the branches in the working season. They are betler where there is a circulation of a;r and where they can have the moms In bright moonlight ing sun. nights, in warm weather, they work also at night. When second-hanhives are used. the hives should be cleaned thoroughly before using. If you find too many drones in the hives, they ore better cut out, for if there are more drones than working bees, they will eat the honey as fast as it is made. There is one kind of foul brood that I cut out wherever I find it. It b caused by bad management in win ter or summer. If the bees are cold in winter and cannot hatch the eggs of the queen, they die in the cold, at a tender age If they are too warm, they also die at a tender age. As soon as I find young stock like this dead in the shell, I cut them out and the other bees go on prosper ously. When the hive is lull of capped honey, I take' out the honey and clean up the hive. If there is a hive that is weak, there is a class ot bees that will tarn on them and rob them ami take bees and honey. If the hive is strong, the guards meet the robber and carry 'am on a prisoner The stronger the hives are kept, the harder they work, but they nuit have room or they will swarm and leave. To keep the hives thrifty, there should be some ol the old combs la ken out, to give them a chance to make pew ones, lithe bees swarm and leave, your best bees are gone and leave you the old comb and old stock in dividing. If I cannot find a young queen in the cell, I take the most thrifty of young stock and place it in the new hive and move tne new hive where the old one stands. I made one stand from two and did not weaken either of theiu. 1 also gave one man a divide of bees andtended them for him that sum mer and I made him six stands and took out for him 100 pounds of lion ey that season and all his bees are in good order. 1 have Bold bees all over the coun Box Elder and Da try through this, vis counties,- - all from one original stand of bees. I have taken many tons of honey from bees that came from that stand of bees for which I paid f 15 ten years ago. Bj W. C. Telegraph to the JrfOTOH., The Czarewaa. London. June 4.
