O. Reynolds, of Geneva, read a carefully prepared paper upon diphtheria, in which he stated that the disease had been kaowm under different names from the earliest history of medicine. He said that the disease is not governed by any known climatic or meteorological laws or atmospheric conditions. As the nature and pathology of diphtheria yet remain somewhat veiled in obscurity, it is not surprising that its treatment has often been vacilla experimental and uncertain. TtiCru are cases so mild that n medication is necessary, and there are 01 hers so malignant and rapid in tneir course that the best treatment known to the profession will fail to arrest or mitigate, rrom what is known of its pathology, a sustaining tonic and stimulating treatment is plainly indicated, and tho efficacy o! this plan has been verified by thous ands of judicious physicians during the past few years. Ihis kind of treatment is particularly required in c.ises of considerable severity, as the tendency is to depression and death by asthenia. In such cases tonics, stimulants and nourishing diets should be commenced early and persisted ia systematically. We have a arned to place great reliance upon quinine, chlorate of potash, tincture of chloride of iron and alcoholic stimulus: and these rarely disappoint us unless the cases sire very malignant. We have no sterotyped formula, but would prescribe for a six chili about the following: yoar-olQuinine,two grains; tincture chloride of iron m., ten; to be taken together m a teaspoon tul ot whiskey sling every four hours: also a tablespoon-fu- l of a saturated aqueous solution of potash chloras every hour during the day, but less oftoa during the night, to enable the patient lo get more rest. If maiked astheaia is present or oc curs during treatment we increase the alcoholic stimulant decidedly. We have given with apparently good results to a child a half ounce of whiskey every hour. We insist upon good nourishment throughout, and should the stomach reject medicine and nourishment, or both, we direct their administration in the form of enemas. Local treatment of the throat often does more harm than good, especially with timid children. When the patient is old enough to use gargles intelligently we frequently direct their use, not with a view to arresting the disease, but to soothe and mitigate in some measure the local inflammation. But mopping tho throat with med icated solution is worse than useless with young children. The inhala tion of steam or medicated vapor is highly recommended. A Utah Inventor. The Herald of this morning states that Mr. Andreas Olsen, of Ephraim, Sanpete county, has lately received a patent for what promises to become an important invention. His inven tion consists of a new plan for the The construction of steam-vesselobject, as set out in the specification) is "to provide a hull for vessels; and the inven tion consists in two longitudinal tubular pontoons sustained parallel to etch other at a suitable distance apart by transverse connecting braces, In combination with struts extending vertically from each pontoon, longitudinal cylinders connected to the upper ends of the vertical posts or struts immediately above tho parallel to the pontoons, and transverse braces connecting the two cylinders, the structure so formed being adapted to sustain the vesdeck, cabins etc., of a and the such sel, arrangement being that if the posts or struts and upper horizontal cylinders, which mainly support tho deck, cabins etc., should accidentally become detached from the pontions by rough usage said up per cylinders will still subserve the purpose of floating the remaining sea-goin- ajr-tig- sea-goin- g structure." . r Party. Last evening a merry party met at the residence of Mr. Edward T. Taylor, to celebrate the union between that gentleman and Miss Annie M. Murphy. The biiderooin is a gentleman of Ogdeu, and the amiable bride, who is a native of Parsons, Kansas, is tho sister of Mr. Edward Murphy, conductor on the C. P. K.
