MAN'S REPLY TO THE ANI MATERIALIST."' Th tocttfre delivered by Hon. 3Tatha Pollock in the Ogden K. Taher-nableo- Sunday evening entitled to more tlrarv passing comment. The lecturer presents a fine appearance n ihe platform, has an- intellectual head countenance, a: and a graceful figure; evidently, whatever may impel this strict secularist to undertake such a task as the one he has in hand the overthrow of Ingersollism a lack of ballast oclie docs not cupies no place in it. discuss the subject a would a minister of the gospel or an ecclesiastical student, but rather argue it s a clentixt and makes hi point plain, clo'hing hi ideas with the choicest of rhetoric, and at times arising to lofty flights of oratory. While the objective point of the locture was understood to bo the fatuity of the doctrines advanced by fol. R. G. Inge.rnoll, it really took a much broader scope, and was largely aimed at that peculiar idiosyncrasy of modern science known as Darwinism. It is the easiest matter in the world for the essayist to declare that a doctrine, has been "riddled,'' "annihilated," "exploded," etc., but while holding that this wa the case in Mr. Pollock's disquisition on Darwin's theory .we could not do the lec turer such injustice as to let our rest upon assertions which may beandoftcn are made without further thought, sometimes under the enthu siasm engendered by the stimulating fore of eloquence, ami sometimes (throng h alack of terms or a narrowness of analytical capacity on the part of the individual so declaring. w a-- com-merrt- Our own judgment, we realize fully, is vastly inadequate to the task, but we will briefly review some of the salient pointsof Mr. Tollock's argu- ment, feeling convinced that space rtnnot be better employed at a time like the present, when infidelity is rife and materialism holds high throughout the land. Commencing with a definition of the term "evolution," showing that H means the gradual unfolding of conditions In nature into other and higher conditions, and admitting for the sake of argument that man, has advanced by progressive yet skvwiy developing stages from the Udpole ' p through the succeeding phases of improved organic life until his pre sent lofty status is reached, it is then asked why Ihe process of evolution ends here. If man Is evolved from tower orders of life, is the process by whi'(jfpiieis unfolded exhausted when ke assumes the form and mind of Man? No, for the reason that progression in nature is an endless ehain, and advancement before means advancement hereafter. If msn was begotten out of something inferior, then it follows that the.abil ky of begetting something superior abides within him, and will develop itself with that spontaneity and absence of volition which characterized Yet we find his own production. man occupying a distinct and un ehanging organism in all the ages of the world, not even his intellect being in its ancient condition ren lerd feeble or inefficient by comfor the parison with that of immortal words of Socrates were written and spoken before Christ was born; there is no poetry equal to that of Homer, and no art superior to that of ancient Greece. But if the evolution theory were proved which is shown to be impossible it lollows that Darwinism is impaled upon a lanee for which it was not looking, namely, that the force of progress carries us on to still grander developments after this stage of existence is ended, aud against this proposition the author of that theory as well as Messrs. Ingersoll, Huxley and others, protest as vehemently as they do against the other distinguishing features of Christianity. They con tend that mind, being the product of matter, expires with the matter; that ' the matter out of which the mind is created grows out of the nourishment taken into the system therefore is man remanded to a still lower condition than that of the tadpole, his creation and continued life being the result of spontaneous action on th part of bacon and beau And yet this nutriment is not true to the position assigned it by the great iconoclasts of the age, for, in the stomach of a Napoleon, it produces a great soldier; partaken by a Shakespeare we have a great poet; by a Webster, a great saatesman; and by an Ingersoll, a great orator of materialism. If this is not the reduetio ad abturaum of Ingersollism and Darwinism then there is no meaning in wordi and no force in logic." The lecturer was at a loss to com- cur-niv- to-da- 1 ever witnemed a harvest time, beheld a tburter shower, noted the coming and going of the seasons, or watched the gtoviom orb of day aseend to the heavens, could question the existence of a Deity. Suvely, these are alj the product of laws, and laws are the product of intelligence; and the fact that such achievements are beyond the power of man, shows that they emanate from an intelligence tctlmtof man. And not until our imtellect is expanded, and our vision increased in another and higher pfaHC of life, shall we be able to fully comprehend why these things are, and why we now grope in the darkness of inferior judgment. We wish that every man and wo child of sufficient man, and every , i to oi annul years un'iersianumg, We could have heard Mr. Pollock. can but imperfectly outline his posi tions, and can only distantly refer to Rut the. scope of his- - argument. those who attended were well paid for their trouble, it being a rare intellectual treat, and as complete a demolition of atheism, skepticism and evolution as is possible to be framed in so many words. Our young men, in particular, who are now in that period of life iu which the impressions received are apt to be last ing, would show good judgment and give much bi tter promise of becoming great and useful men, if they would at least divide their time with such intellectual pursuits instead of bestowing it all upon labor and those pastimes which may do but little harm but are certain to .accomplish It is to their inteno great good. rest to cultivate a belief in God, Christ and an existence beyond the grave; tho mere acceptance of these truths is not enough, for that which is permitted to enter because it. is not resisted, is apt to dopai t when tho hour of resistance comes; and we know of no more pleasing method of acquiring information than by lis tening to as excellent lectures as that of Mr. Pollock. Inhdelitv, like other evils, cultivates itself; it only wants a footing; like the first barnacle which is permitted to fast en itself upon a ship, it will become stronger aud more difficult to remove as others of its kind cluster around it, until at last the vessel is weighted lown and lost. Unueliel is simply an uncultivated garden; nothing good being sown or nourished, rank, poisonous weeds assume the places where nourishment, ana those shrubs and plant which de light the eye and refresh the senses, might abound.
