The natives of I ndia are notoriously cruel, blood-thirstand treacherous, and nothing but the strong arm of military power and physical might can keep them in subjection. It has been urged that English rule in India has been severe to an unwarrantable extent, but in view of the dastardly character of the degraded beings over which she exercises control, we are unable to see wherein or how she could do any better. We have no doubt that the late outrages are due as much to the fact of Her Majesty's government having temporarily relaxed iu surveillance in that quarter, as to anything else. The savages finding that for a time thev had not been held to such rigid accountability for their acts as formerly, took advantage of "the respite to wreak upon their supposed enemies such .vengeance as Indians alone know how to execute, being so ferocious and so utterly devoid of every semblance of human instincts is to shock the civilized DISTRICT Or COLUMBIA. COLORADO. The Georgetown (Cal.) Miner says Captain William Jones, who has been over to Caribon, brought back with him a remarkable natural curiosity. It is a section of stovewood nine sawed from a tree about inches in diameter. In splitting it Captain Jones disclosed a pine cone, imbedded in the wood, which, by the presure of the annual growth of the wood, is as hard as adamant, and which retains its natural purple color. It was evidently one of the topmost cones when the tree was very young. The stem of the cone was caught by about the sixth annual growth, and the rings of the wood show that it gradually enveloped, and had been finally hidden for over six years before the axe of tho woodman gave it a chance for resurrection. H. L. Carver, of St. Paul, arrived at Bismarck from the hills recently, whither he has been on a lengthy investigating tour. He brings with him a ton of ore for assay from the silver bonanza belonging to C. W. Capenter, D. A. Montfort, Charley baton, L. VV. Kittson, and others. Carpenter & Co., propose putting in a $75,000 silver mill. They have on dump sufficient ore to more than pay for the mill. Ihe mine is wonderfully rich, and assays as high as $2,- 000 per ton. California capitalists approached Mr. Carpenter with a tempting offer that was promptly refused. The silver mining interest in the hills has not been developed, and this company of St. Paul gentlemen will be the first to introduce a silver mill. Rpuiarkable Result.
