THE BURTON TRIAL, The"Morrisite massacre"' has leen a theme of constant agitation and discussion for some years past, ami perhaps it is just an well that the subject receive its quietus through the medium of a full and thorough legal txpose as otherwise, and hence the trial of Gen. Burton, now progressing at Salt Lake 'ity, may be t4gard.nl as the mean by whi h an-- ' other of the campaign guns so operated by the minority party of Utah against the majority, maybe ;iked. For, the reader may this will be no slight or rest partial investigation; the whole ground of the proceeding, from the oatrage perpetrated on unoffending citizens by the "Morrisites" and the consequent calling out of a pofxe tmmlatun by the Governor, to the arrest of the commanding officer for the killing consequent upon the carrying out of the Chief Justice's bench warrant nil will be passed in review and given to the world. There are numbers of people in Utah and they are not confined to the majority element who know the Jwhole story its defenses, offenses and consequences, and to these the developments will be nothing new; but the continuous cry set up by one side, in which the offenses have appeared exclusively on the part of the "Mormons," has had the effect of prejudicing those of impartial tendencies, and now is the accepted time for the facts to go to the whole public. The testimony being introduced by the prosecution is, of course, all against the defendant; this was to be expected since legal procedure has not yet reached that stage of perfection in which a prosecuting attorney realizes that he is a representative of all sides and should develop everything", favorable and unfavorable. Suppose it does; what with a proceeding instituted to convict, with its thief functionary lobbying, logrolland arranging for ing, button-holin- g months in advance, having the ex pressed determination in view of defeating any plea in mitigation, is it at all likely that, after such prepara tion as has been made the drillings of witnesses and the general sifting to which the detail have been subjected the evidence would not point in that direction? cut those who are so sanguine as to the ' establishment of guilt should possess their souls in patience, remembering that the defense is yet to come in. One side is always good until the other is heard, and there are a few witnesses and some little law oft the part of Gen. Burton Those who fancy that the case is al ready decided are in error, and, under the avalanche ol defense shortly io be precipitated upon that proceeding, are likely to find themselves wonderfully disappointed as well. It seems a little singular that, amid the confusion, blending of per sons and incidents and the period of general excitement consequent upon the treacherous attempt of the "Morrisites" to rally and renew the struggle (they having previously surrendered), the witnesses can remember early every iota of the details necessary to connect Gen. Burton with the summary execution of two or three persons, yet ara unable to recall matters of less consequence which would go towards the extenuation of such act. They can remember only such details as the prosecution inquire in relation to, but their memories are suddenly and wonderfully powerless when questioned by the defense. One of them knows to a certainty the date upon which he joined the p&tse, the time of departure for the field, the day of arrival, the details connected with the the entry into the camp of the lawless squad, the deliberate shooting of Morris, Banks and Mrs. Bowman by General Burton, the language used by the parties, and all other incidents of a like nature which go to make up premeditation and malice; but cannot tell who his messmates were nor anything in relation to a hundred other circumstances with .edicatel bjr There are times in the lives of nil of us when an incident, common enough by comparison with the world at large, assumes such propor tions in the eyes of those immediate ly interested as make all other sublunary affairs appear contemptible in their littleness. That time is when the tidings are conveyed to us that we have placed ourselvesin line with the endless phalanx of those who do not permit the human species to die out or fall oft"; when, in short, we Isecome a parent. This is to all who have ever been there. We congratulate our ally upon this particular legal tender having come to par (and mar), and hope that, unlike the other legal tenders, it may not rise above par, except in vocal-isms- , which they are generally able to do from the beginning. And may the genial glow of paternal regard which is now diffused so freely around the sacred presence of the little stranger have the effect of lighting her path to future greatness and goodness and virtue, when, like her respected mother, she has taken her place among the women of the land. Babies are always a study, no matter when or where or how often we see them. To those whe ore responsible for their appearance, they are often Romethiug more. Little morsels of humanity, articulating in a manner and making use of language peculiar to themselves nothing copied, nothing imitated; each has its own dialect that no one else even had before, and when it is abandoned in favor of a more expressive but less innocent system, no other ever picks it up. And no one but the mother knows a syllable of what is said; to her each and every chirp is laden w ith meaning and susceptible of the most satisfactory interpretation. Thus it is that the tender juvenile is always older to the mother than to the father; she can see teeth where all to him appeal as an unbroken coral gem; can construct sentences out of sounds which he calls meaningless noise; can single out features of resemblance to its parents which never occurred to him until pointed out, and not always in a very striking manner then; and invades futurity to enjoy in her offspring those little acquirements and advantages which the father stupid man! must wait patiently for tardy gaited months and years to unfold! But it is all proper enough; at least; we shall never make an effort to change it. This may not be intelligence to a majority, who know all about it by experience; and the other class won't believe it. But they will some day. Again do we extend our hearty congratulations to the father and mother, and best wishes for the welfare of the "only baby in the world worth speaking of." All kinds of prosperity and happiness attend the trio now and hereafter. Hot Tea and Coffee At all reasonable hours, at Goody's, Fifth Street. dl5 Cm HOUSES BOUGHT AND SOLD.
