Thursday Mousing, Feb. 20, 1879. A RESURRECTED FOSSIL. Rev. John P. Newman, DJ., a man of infinite piety and matchless Christianity, is redivlvus that is, he is heard from onoo more, this time in opposition to the Chinese immigration restrictive hill. The parson must have been born under some planet that was in opposition, for he is ever and always opposing something is not happy when he is not "kicking" like a wild bull against the things that be. This would doubtless be well and good, since contrary influences are generally healthful, in that they act as a counterpoise and keep tho social machinery well regulated; but Newman's resistance to established institutions has so far had an effect precisely the reverse of what he intended his combativeness creating its own reflex, as it were. Many people in and outof Utah will remember the "minister militant's " visit to this benighted land some few years ago. He came armed with a.hew gospel dispensation, bearing upon its banner the memorable inscription "Leviticus XVIII, 18," and he cume to perform for polygamy what St. Patrick did for the reptiles in Ireland. He came, he saw, he was conquered; his Hebrew lore prepared especially for the occasion was unavailing; and he left the field covered with humiliation and smarting under the stings of defeat. From that time till the present but little has been heard of him. Hayes (the explorer, not the de facto Executive) discovered a small island on his route to the North Tole, somewhere in the neighborhood of Baffin's Bay, and named it "Newman's Land" in honor of the Parson; the expedition was a failure and the land has never been heard of since! Then the reverend gentleman took a spin round the globe, ostensibly for the benefit f his health, but really for the benefit of his congregation. They wished him a long if not a prosperous journey when he left, and rejoiced not at his return. But he did return, and enjoyed a melancholy obscurity delightful to others if not to himself until the Chinese bill penetrated to the realms of his seclusion and drag ged him forth long enough to get up a petition to Hayes (the de facto, not the explorer) requesting that worthy to withhold his signature from the aforesaid document. So far so good ' but if the advocates of the bill had only known in advance that this resmrrection was to take place, they might have used it to their benefit earlier in the day by securing the defunct's opposition soon enough in the fight to have insured the success f the bill. They doubtless fear his adverse action has come too late to lie of service to them, but they should take courage from the fact that it cannot possibly do them any harm. He commenced Sunday, Oct. 21, 1877, and finished Saturday, Nov. 17,, 1877, there being eight judges appointed by the leading sporting papers.
