At 8 a m. this morn iog the thermometer showed nineiy in the shade, and before noon the mercury The sky is cloudy reached ninety-firenow, and a good breeze prevails, and there are indications of a thunderstorm. There continues to be many deaths from sunstroke. Augusta, Me , 13. Mr. Blaine, owing to the very excessive heat of the last few days, has not improved. The effect of the heat on Mr. Blaine's condition fully confirmed his physicians in ihe belief that the original trouble was of the nature of sunstroke. B'smorck, 13. ' Col. Burke, agent at gundisg Rock, has just arrived. He gives a good account of bis Indians, and says they are all on the reservation except a few who are hunting. They are, however, uneasy because no provisions bave been sent for them, and because tltey realise that a change of policy must result from the late massacre. A gontleman came in with Burke who talked with an Indian just in from the hostiles. He says nine bands, in numbers more than he oould count, engaged Custer, and lost more men than he, the Uucopapa'8 losing 160 killed ana 86 wounded. Among the killed were Crazy Horse and Black Moon two of the prinsipal hostile chiefs. The latter was first, Crazy Horse second and Sitting Bull third in rank and influence. Cel. Smith says the body of a great chief was found, and for a lime was supposed to be that of Sitting Bull, but men who know him pronounce against confirming the Indian story, to some extent. The story in relation to the Indian loss comes through responsible sources, and ' is believed here. The statement that the Grosventres and Mondans had joined Sitting Bull, proves untrue, though they seriously contemplated that course. Reinforcements sent to Terry seem to he unnecessarily delayed. 1 he, Durfee left Yankton to day to bring them forward by rail They could have reached Bismarck before this lime by river, but they will not get here before the 22d, and in the meantime the river is falling rapidly, and the delay may prove dangerous as well as expensive. New York, 13 Carl Schurz. in a private letter, says: "There is a striking contrast between the hard and seft money mixture in the Democratic platform and the candidates, and the strong, fearless assertion of moral duty in the financial paragraph of Gov. Hayes' letter of acceptance. The views he expressed about civil service reform are most comprehensive and cleariy defined, and in every respect the most satisfactory civil service reform programme 1 ever knew uttered in a few words. That programme is accomplished by the pledge of an honest man that if elected it shall be faithfully carried oul in its completeness, and that no personal ambition shall interfere with the work. Never have civil service reformers a better opportunity to fight with the chance of real success of their cause. I shall support Gov. Hayes heartily and aciive'y, and 1 have never- felt more clearly the consciousness of Joing the right thing far the best interests of tho country." . Saratoga, 13. Governor Hendricks was waited on at Ihe Grand Uniu to day by Mj. O'Connor, of Tennessee, who presented him with the formal notification of bis nomination. Gov. Hendricks said he would reply in a few days. It is understood (hat he accepts. Omaha, 13.
