Buekalew was chosen to head the election ticket of Pennsylvania. The platform adopted pledges an eoonoinical administration of government affairs, honest payment of the public debt, and a sound preservation of public faith. It charges bribery and fraud in the administration of government affairs, and that the financial embarrassment is the direct results of personal government, unwise legis'ation, vicious financial policy, extravagance and corruption ef the Republican party. Fort Laramie, 22. News was brought in last night by a party from Custer City of a fight between tbe miners and Indians on Dead-woo- d creek, sixty miles north of Custer. The miners attacked the Indians and killed thirteen. One white man was killed. The Indians had been running off stack. More trouble is expected. Helena, Mon., 22. A paper has been ciroulated and extensively signed by business men of this place protesting against the people of the territory veting aid te the Northern Pacific railway, claiming that such a tax would be ruinous to tbe interests of the territory, and calling on the newspapers to oppose the subsidy. General Gibbon, with a military pos, has arrived at this place en route fei the Yellowstone country, te bring the Indians in that lection into subjection. Syracuse, N. Y., 22. The republican state convention was called to erder by A. B. Cornell, whe eid that for the' first time in sixteen years the choice of a presidential candidate was open for discussion; no distinctive public sentiment points to a candidate whose nomination is conceded. After the temporary organization, some discussion ensued on the question of rules, in whioh the Conkling party prevailed by a vote of 258 to 120. George Danson was elected permanent chairman, and A. B. Cornell, Andrew D. White, Theodore M. Pomeroy and James M. Mathews were appointed delegates to the national convention, and E. A. Merritt, A. D. Garnett, Gee. B. Sloan and A.C. Judson alternates. Tbe resolutions adopted are of the usual form, eulogizing tbe republican party and Grant, denouncing fraud and corruption, calling for a specie currency damning tbe democratic party as treasonable and filling the house of representatives with the nation's foes. Xney present Roscoe Conkling to the national convention as tbe choice for president of half a million republican voters in Excellent Books. "Seek out of the best books words of wisdom." We are reminded of this divine behest on look ing over the pages of three works, by Samuel Smiles, of London. They are entitled Self Help, Character and Thrift. These ere certainly among the best books of the times, and contain a great many words of true wisdom. They should be placed in the hands of our young people throughout the Territory( and will impart many valuable hints which may affect the conduct for life. Not only is their matter good, but it is presented in such a pleasant, yet forcible manner as to entertain while it instructs. For young folks just en the turning point in life these works are most excellent, be'og calculated to aid in the formation of character, end stamp upon the mind principles of lasting bene, fit te individuals and to society. They form handsome and suitable presents, and can be obtained for $1.50 per volume of James Dwyer, Salt Lake City. At the same house can be obtained Roberts Rules of Order, which is the most compact and comprehensive work of its size we have ever seen on parliamentary rules. It is divided into two parts, viz: Rules of Order and Organization and Conduct of Business. For debating societies, literary institutions, or for any association or persons who wish to understand the correct mode of conducting public assemblies, this little work will be found invaluable.
