In Omaha, last Tuesday evening, Edward Rote-watEsq., proprietor of the 'Omaha Daily Bee," was the viotim of a murderous assault, perpetrated by two negroes and a white man named Smith Coffey. The trio met Mr. Roaewater about six o'clock, add while the white man held him one of the negroes presented a cocked revolver to his breast, while the other negro, a saloon keeper, by the name of Curry, pounded him over the head and face with a slung shot. Mr. Rosewater was very badly hurt and it is impossible to say how his injuries may terminate. All the assailants were arrested and held in $3,000 bail to await the result of the injuries inflicted. The trouble grew out of an article which appeared in the Bee, charging Curry with keeping a "colored den" in that city, whero "gambling and kindred crimes were committed." ; Why Does Everybody Fifth d!30-t- f Fancy Drinks eery styls at the C. Stratford: Dear Sir: In acsordance with ny promise to you before leaving Utah, I tuke my pen to give you a few items of news from this part of the world. We arrived in Auckland on December 13th. We were thirty-thredays on the passage from Sin Francisco. We were detained eight days, on account of our steamer breaking two cranks. Auckland is a very nice town, with a population of about 22.000 inhabitants. Here we parted company with tbe missionaries going to Australia. On tbe 15th, Elders McLachlin, Rich, F. W. Hurst and your correspondent, embarked on board the Uawea for Wellington, called at Tarana-ki- . Nelson and Pidon. On the 18tb, after a very pleasant voyage, we arrived at Wellington, my old home It is the seat cf government, and the second largest town in New Zealand. Elders McLachlin and Rich continued their voyage to Littleton, while my brother and myself stayed here to visit our friends. We enjoyed a very pleasnnt time with them, not having seen them for twenty-twyears. I left Wellington on the 23 J for Littleton, and arrived at that place on Christmas day, passing through Cbristchurch, a very pretty town, of about 10,000 inbabiUnts, emhowts-e- i in trees, over a splendid road, with htdge on each title; for twelve milds. Through "fields of waving corn" to Kaiapoi, here I I'oHtid a small nraneh of tbe Church, under (he presidency ef Elder James Sa;nt, and my Burnett, a lire Laiter-duand Elder James traveling companion Steed, from Farmiugton, who has been laboring here for one month We are getting 1,000 copies of "Toe Only Way to be Suved," printed, and I think we will do a good work here in this province.
