Show OGDEN JUNCTION FIFTH STREET. CHARLES W. PENROSE, K. STItA TFORTT, BUttnett Tiesdaj Evening, in. - EDITOR Manager. 11, 18"6 LA tHIlS' I'KTITIOAS. Severarf weeks ago tte Cincinnati article I'rnm the Times published on Junction on the marriage question, and commented upon it in an edito rial under the title of "The Mor monV riaa," from which we nuke one or t to extracts. After ccknowl edginjj that th argument presented were new to the writer, he goes on to say : "The argument oi the able editor pro ceeJg on the assumption that it is brat far all wouvea to be married; and that if every woman cannet have exclusive pos on-of the nobler sex, it conduce! it her happiness and well being to have a elm re in a mun, larger or smaller, according to cirouruslauces. If this premise ts correct, and' if the liiblical ' foundation of polygamy be regarded as we.l settled, it is diflioult to see how niea who do not marry several wives are performing their duty la fact, this can he staled in a much stronger form. If is right, every man our fellow-Iubore- r who fails to save at least two women from "the blight of celibacy" stands iu Lniard of condemnation for a grot's neglect of duty. For it is as olear as any preposition in moral philosophy, that mau does not live for himself alone, and that the highest im of life should be to eottre the happiness of others. If, at tiiis same time, he can confer pleasure oo himself, he is assuredly in the right path. The Mormons appear to stand in such position. By pursuing his own pleasure he brings happiness to others, and their happiness, by a kind of reflex action, increases his own again. Thus Is be doubly blessed blessed in giving and in receiving. The wonder is that when tba blessings of Mormonism, to both sexes, can thus be so distinctly set forth, the institution does not spread faster. ' tend ion of To this we offer no objections. Al though uttered ironically, the posi tion is correctly defined. And now we come to the point of objection, to w hich the bandinayre of the Times is : IIre it is only preliminary. The only peg on which to bang a doubt in jeference to the conclusions of the gifted defender of the Mormon faith is the silence of women. Before accept ing it as man a moral duty to marry sev erally, instead of singly, we should like to, hear from those whom Mormon us vioes have saved from "the blight of oeubacy." tVe hare kepi the so extracts, and The two petitions have no connec tion. Tho first was only signed by "Mormon" ladies, the second, which is originated with Icing signed by ladies of all sections of the committee. Neither of them may accomplish tho object desired But the first serves to show the sen timents of tho "Mormon" women on the marriage question, and is a suffi cient reply to the doubts of the Cin cinnati Times. And we hope that those papers which hare misrepre sented both petitions, and the inten tions of the Indies wh have can vassed for signatures, will eorrect their misstatements, and do justice to themselves and to thoso whom they have falsely accused.
