Wednesday Jan. 5. 18 "6 hecjgixg THE question The Reynolds case ha provoked omment from many influential papers in different parts of the country, to handle but none of itsmerits. Tha eoly the on, point they make in its consideration " the .obligations of society, laws of included, to obey the the land. This point the pcoplo of Utah hare Obedionco to law, never disputed. human and divine, is ene of the " fundamental doctrines of the faith. Those who are acquainted with the people who have made these sterile mountain Tallies habitable and admit that, polygamy beautiful, aside, there ia not a more thrifty, people peaceable and on the continent. Their submission to law is due to the influence and teaohings of their religion, and those who declare the contrary, either are grossly ignorant of that religion or they wilfully misrepresent it. The only question on which the "Mormon" psoplo coma into conflict with the law is the marriage question. And the only point really at isue in le Reynolds case, is the validity of the law of '62, which was enacted to make a crime out of an essential part of a religious institution. The comments of the press di not touch this quostiou. They assume the law of '02 to bo constitutional, without argument, while the whoie controversy turns on its coustilut-onalityOur position is that Congress h barred by the Constitution from passing any suoh law as the gamy set of '62, because it prohibits the free exercise of an "establishment of religion." That act is therefore veld, and the "Mormon" people, instead of being law breakers are the champions of the cau3e of religious luberty. ,If our opponents dispute tuis position, lei them show that marriage is not an establishment of religion, and prove the right of Congress to pass the law which we are accused of violating.- We draw the line between religious liberty and the infraction of constitutional law, at the point of infringement upon human rights. We have, oa more than one occa- sion. called attention to the evil et- fucts of adulterated liquors in our own community. Whiskey drinking is an evil habit. Rut how much more evil ia the practice of tippling, when the mo6t villainous kind of is imbibed, poisoning the wholo system, inflaming the passions and urging those under its influence to deed of horror! No liquor should be sold ia this city until it has passed the tests of the Inspecter of Liquors. A great deal of the stuff retailed by the drink in this Territory, comes from Cali fornia. Rut if report says truly, some of it is entirely innocont of travel till it runs down the throat of a dram drinker, who fancies he is drinking whiskey, rum, brandy or gin, where as he is swallowing Cologns spirits, doctored with drugs, and disguised with flavoring oils. We have heard of peuple who think they must have some kind of stimu lant, and who are aware of the adul teration practised in the liquor trade, but purchase alcahol, which they di lute and sweeten and swallow, under the impression- that they are deing themselves no kjury, but are escaping from the evils of adulterated drink. This crude stuff, unrefined, full of fire and venom, and pregnant is a pcsnt weapon with in the hands of The Destroyer. Those who indulge in its use, like the drinkers of the drugged decoctions, take into their bodies drams of death We do not believe the common use of intoxicating drinks of benefit ' to anybody. 1 Still there are many persons who are so habituated to the use of that kind of stimulant, that it appears to them essential to their comfort, if not life itself. For their s: kes and for the sake of people who use strong drink only as a medi cine, internally or externally, we urge the inspection of all liquors kept for sale within the limits of the city, feel ing assured that it is impure and deleterious imitations, rather than veritable whisky, that ruins the health, robs the senses, incites to crime, and hurries th9 victims of dram drinking into dishonored hell-brot- h - blood-poiso- THAT ALL KINDS OF Many Thousand iti at boots A FINE STOCK OF DRY &s?
