Show She tuarle odea guhttion. W. Penrose. Editor tad SinH Manager.' OUDEX. UTAH. Friday ETeninj, Feb. 12, 1875. BABHIXG AT HOi;lS GOVEBSOB. THIS Tbo orau of the flattcneJ-ou- t "riDg,r at Salt Lake is slinging at Gov. Axtell a portion of the aliuo "Morgenerally scooped up lor the mons." The great crime of the Governor is the issuing to JIou. Geo. Q. Cannon his certificate of election, without asking permission of the 'ring." The handful of adventurers and refugees whu compose the dilapidated eircular combination, imagine that every Federal official is seHt hei to aid them in their nefarious intrigues, having received B much encouragement of that kind from former officials as to give thent some show of reason for such a notion. George Q. Cannou was Delegate at the last general election by the votes of nearly all the people of Utah. The opposition vote was so mall as to be scarcely worth men tioning. It was the Governor's duty to issue the certificate of election. It was none of his business whether was a "Mormon" or a ''Gentile;" or to enquire whether ha was a monogamist or a polygamistj or to decide as to his qualifications foroffico The only- question before him was, who received the majority of tho people's votes? That being decided over wbelmingly in favor of Mr. Cannou, he had nothing more to do iu the matter than to issue his certificate f the fact. He simply performed his duty, and is neither entitled to praise or worthy of blame. But the Dirt Slingcrs are after He is accused of agreeing to bim certain things as "the price of bis office;", of "abusing. the power entrusted to his hands;" of exhibiting either.i'ignorance or knavery;" of having ''sworn and CDteuanted to pro tttute his powers, to prolong the roign of the usurping- - Priesthood;" and to show clearly that he was expected, like his predecessor in office, to be I too! of the "ring," the flowing, an well as the above quoted expressions, is spurted at bim through this morning's "organ." - "If the Governor is soling in goil fnith tcr tbe Gentile 'element of TJiau, whose oause he is supposed to represent, ha would eerUinlj take due time to deliberate on tbe in alter, and only issue tbe document when tho proper performance of his duty renders it necessary. " The Governor of Utah, according to tbe '.'ring," is supposed to represent a' small minority of tbe people. That rs their idea of tbe functions of our Territorial Executive. The fact is be is not, or should not be, a "rep-resectativ- e' of any. class, faction, . sect or partv. He is the Governor of the Territory, not the tool of a clique. Tbe "Mormons" nsither ask nor expect the Executive to champion their eause, nor show to them any partiality in any way whatever. They simply hope that be will da his duty, as an upright official, without bias or leaning in any direction. But unless he will "deliberate" with the crowd who want to ride rougVehod over the right and liberties of the people who made Utah; who have come here to wrest from the hardy workers tbe fruits of their toil; and who want all the offices in tho gift of, the Government or the bands of the citizens; le Weblbot, who nearly gassed himself out of his breeches. 8. B. Axtell comes here with an honorablo record, without the sound of trump or tho blast of bugle, simply announcing his approach to an old official friend, performs an act of duty imposed upon lhi by his oath ot etfiee, and before ho ha? time to show what stuff he is made of, or what cour?r be will take in the sphere of his labors, he is set upon and abused and barked at by the hired hounds of the "ring," and accused 0f "hostility and treaohery" and other terrible things; aud all because he didn't ask these creatures of a day what cmrm would bo pleasing to their ideas of his position. We hope Gov. Axtell will walk his own path, acting impartially, unswervingly, and as a servant of the Govcrnnifint and a father to the peo pie, and he may be assured of the cordial support of all the decent citizens of Utah, "Mormon" and "Gentile," and the curses of the vile crew who cannot handle him as their own.
