The Cork Constitution of the 22(1 of October, has the following: "Oa yesterday a most extraordinary feat waa performed by an American gentleman named Paul Uoyton, who, by the aid of a newly invented swimming apparatus, has swam a distance of upward of seventeen miles. Mr. Uoyton was a passenger from America by the National steamer Queen, and it appears he joined the steamer at New York, with the intention of lowering himself ioto a couple of hundred miles off apparaSandy Hook, in a tus which has beeujeccntly invented by a Mr. Merryuian. the apparatus consists of a trowsers, with a steel spring bolt, and a tunic covering the There upper portion of the body. in the machine, are the object being to keep the wearer afloat. The position which the wearer is to assume on reaching the water is to float on his back, and the apparatus is then worked by a pair of paddles, one at each side, on the principle of the canoe. Equipped in this apparatus Mr. Boyion :ntended, as wo have already mentioned, to enter into nfid ocean about 2U0 miles off the Fastuet, but when the Captain of the Queen became aware of his intention he point blank refused to allow him to carry it out, but promised to allow Mr. Boy-to- n to make his experiment on the Irish coast. The steamer arrived ofl the Irish coast about 0 o'clocV, when, in opposition to the Captain and all on board, Mr. Boytou equipped himself in his oppirafus and set out sevThe ea en miles off the Fastuct was at the time running very high, and the wind blowing vary strongly, rain coming down in torrents, so that frequently before Mr. Boytou had performed his task ho had to shade his faeo with his hands to protect it from a heavy rain that was falling. He worked away with his paddle for eomo time, floated and drifted along alternately, uutil he had been about six hour3 at sea, when seeing an opening between two great rocks, he steered for it, and drifted ashore on llo lit bignals, with a a sand-pit- . riew of attracting atteution, but they were not responded to. He, however, by the aid of their light succeed 'din gaining high ground, wher? he lighted three signals more, but still receiving no response ho broke off on a road, and soon arrived iu kibbereen, he via Baltimore.
