This, however, is in accordance with Ihe principles and genius of congregational-ism- , which impose upon every church the duty of settling its own difficulties without needlessly troubling others. Mr. Tilton's publication, it will be remembered, was made on Thursday, June 25th; Mr. Beecher coming to town on Friday, conducted his usual prayer meetings, and on Saturday. 27th" wrote the above letter, nsklng tbe church to Investigate the matter. The committee lias tctercd upon its work and will prosecute it to the earliat possible com. , , pletion. The second letter of Mr. Beeeher, also addressed to the examining committee referred to above, is contained in the above article. It was obtained last night by a Tribune reporter: "July Cth. Dear Brethren I. euolose to you a letter in which I have requested three gentlemen from the Church, and three frnm the so- eiety of Plymouth Church, gentlemen of uaimpeacbable repute, and who have not been involved in any of the trials through which we passed during the year, to make a thorough, impartial examination of all tbe charges or insinuations against my good name, and report the same to you. I new respectfully request that jeu will gie this committee authority to act in your ochalf. It also seems wise to me that the request should g proceed irom :ne, and without your knowledge, and that you should five authority to act in my behalf in so f.ir as a thorough investigation of facts should be concerned. ... "Signed. IIexbt Waud Beecher." Mr. Sherman says the committee received tbe letter on Sunday, June 29th, and went to work the next day. Their action received Ihe unanimous approval of the examining committee of the church, which met tm July 6th. The six gentlemen were made a of the examining committee. They expected to finish their Inhere; this week, although they may be delayed by the difficulty of getting witnesses; not because the unwillingness of witnesses to testify, but because of the absence of so many of them.
