The.Gazeteer of Utah, and Salt Lake City Directory, by E. L, Sloan, Esq , cf the Salt Lake Herald, has arrived. It is a comprehen sive work, embracing a vast amount of information concerning the principal places in the Territory . The chief cities of Utah occupy important positions in the work, and the mining districts are amply represented and described. We could have wished for a little more care in the arrangement of Ogden business firms, but have ne disposition to find fault. As an instance of omissions, we will say that in the list of lumber dealers, in the Ogden Directory, the largest firm in the trade Williams, Scoville and Co., is left out. The same firm is omitted from the list of carpen ters and builders, when it is the most extensive concern in this line, in the county. Other omhsions of the same kind occur, but in the main the work is well arranged, reliable and exceedingly useful. Victoria Wooducll, The Theatre was not crowded, as was expected, last evening. Lectures, when there is any thing to pay, do not seem to draw in Ogden. The people get their preaching and lecturing gratis, and it is hard to lead them out of the beaten path. . . Mrs. Woodhull'a appearance made a very favorable impression en the audience. Beyond a 'certain fierceness of manner and a general air of combative- ness, the effects, no doubt, of her position before the public and the opposition she has raised, there was nothing in her manner contrary to that of a pleasant-voice- d lad v. In clear, cutenunciated words she and d.stinctly ting commenced to expose the folly and ef our national political system, and to flay alive the leading men of the country, and proeeeded to attack and cover with shame the 40,000 priests who preach but not practice religion. Com ing to the social system she laid right hold of this delicate subject with naked hands nd firm- - grip, tore off Its con pany clothes and exhibited it in alt its The corruptions and uuJe deformity. debauchery of the times were told with no linking speech, nor hesitating words, but every sentence went to the centre. Mrs. WoodUull' told a great deal of truth, more perhaps, than a great many people care to hear; but the frequent applause showed that her audience appreciated the force of facts, and didn't want to close their eyes to them. But it is not a very difficult task to expose the errors of any system. The work of a great mind is to point out a remedy, rather than dwell on the evil. The only panacea offered by Mrs. Wojd-hu- ll last evening, was ttirpicultur, as she denominates the science of human reproduction. To make good society, good men and women must be made. But how? Do away with legal marriage, says Victoria, and let no child tie born except by the wish and desire of both its parents, but particularly the mother. This sounds very well to some ears' at first, but when the consequences 'of such a theory carried out fully in reveal themselves, practice those who can see beauty, peace, life and happiness in order, and strict obedi ence to wholesome laws, revolt at the 's remedy. Unlicensed inter course of the sexes, tatal disregard ot marriage contracts, civil or religious, is revolution with a vengeante, and does not recommend itself to thinking minds, any more than it does to those who de not think deeply yet are keenly sensitive to a fteling of repugnance against this license under the name of liberty. Every pure mind believes in free-loy- e, take the words in their literal meaning. But when those words mean the right to break the marriage vow, to reduce humanity to the level of the brutes (though we admit it would be a raise for some people,) we repudiate the term and view it with abhorrence and disgust. In conclusion we will add that Mrs. Woodhull did not advance her arguments in a sensual or immodest manner in the least degree. There were no dirty jokes or unseemly inuendoes in anything she advanced, but an air of sincerity and thorough earnestness of belief in the principle she propounds, pervaded her whole lecture. It was a very able effort, and though the. lecturer was suffering from headache and occasionally lost the influence which brought her em rapport with hei audience, was listened to with profound interest and attention ts the close. The lecture starts faf Califnmi tb!t! pure-minde- d rot-tene- free-lover- Joseph Horne, Anzv, if. h. S. Hills. evening. BX TELEGRAPH. The Approaching: - Crisis in ArkansasAmerican Silk Manuf ac ture. All considerations lead to the conviction that the annual facilities fur the American manufacture of silk goods are becoming more widely known abroad, and better understood at home. 8t. Louis. 14.
