Between ten and eleven o'clock yesterday morning, this city was thrown into fearful excitement by tbe report that an accident had occurred in Blacksmith's Fork Canyon. The following are the facts of this unfortuoate aff air, which has resulted in the death of James M. Hansen, (better known as Johnny Monsen.) and Thomas Owens, son f Mr. Cadwalluder Owens. Mr. Owens and his son left home about nine o'clock on Saturday morning two far the canyon, and when miles up. at a place called Slide, they met and passed Julmny Monsen, who was coming down with a load of ties for he U. N. K. K. They had scarcely passed each other when the men who were building a new bridge, fhou'.ed to them that a rock slide was coining; but before they had time to get out of the way, a fearfui amount of rock broke lose from the top of the mountain, and canit) down with an awful crah into the road, extending not less tlian forty rods. The first reck, struck Mr.. Owens' WHgnn wheel and tore it in o fragments: the next struck his son, a lad about fifteen years of age, killing him instantaneously: tea ing the top- of his bead completely off, and" breaking bis right shoulder and right ankle, also his lo:t thigh. Mr.' Owens was knocked off his wagon into the road, where he lay iuseusibie for soane time. He ha a large cut on the right side of his bead, and is much bruised on his botly. His , , escape is a perfect miracle. It was found that Johnny Monen hnd He was sustained fearful injuries. thrown from li s wagoa ' thto the road He bus a terrible gash over the right eye, his left foot and ankle were completely smashed. Every aid was rendered by the men on the grand, and the unfortunate sufferers were conveyed to their homes--. A messenger was at once dispatched for Dr. Ormsby of LopaA who arrived about two o'clock intheafurnoen to amputate and found it Moosea's leg just below the calf. The cut over the right eye and extending nearly from the- nose to the ear, was near two inches deep, with a part of the scull drove in;- he was also badly bruised about his stomnch. Dr. Ormsby said he his recovery. could give but little He lingered until 12.40" Sunday morning, when 4eath relieved the poor fellow from his sufferings. Bro. James M. Hansen was 35 years' of age he was a kind and affectionate husband and highly esteemed by all who knew hira, he was a home missionary in this county, and a most promising young man. He leaves a wife and three small children to mourn his loss. Some idea can be formed of the terrible nature of this accident by the followMr. Owen's wagon ing particulars: long and Bingle trees were broken, while the horses eoaped unhurk Monsen's wagen and ties were oompletely smashed into splinters, the heavy iron tires being bent into all manners of shapes, as though they had beeu wire; one horse was killed, the other escaped, bat was badly bruised. The funeral took place at four o'clock this aftenxAn, the l'nblic Hall was filled to overflowing. A large number of persons were unable to gain, admittance. Appropriate addresses were delivered by Bishop O. N. Liljenquist ami Elder C. C. Shaw. The funeral procession extended a quarter of a mile. Much-- - sympathy wa& felt for the families and friends, of these unfortunate men. A very siugular in circumrtance in James M. Hansen's case is, that for the past two weeks he had been engaged with a company, cuttiag timber, about miles up the katiyon, but his twenty-fivlittle son was taken very sick, and It was deemed necessary to send for th father, as the child was in a dangerous condition. He came home on Wednesday, and on the following Saturday, he met with the accident. " C. C. haw. . - DRY'GOODS, GROCERIES, PROVISIONS' Notions, Boots and Shoesy HATS and CAPS. lfd at Ijupr-iTe- Hvt.
