A GOOD APPOINTMENT. The appointment of Hod. Cushing to the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will most assuredly be received with unbounded satisfaction by the country. Not that the appointment is the most unexceptionable that could be made, for there are others that would have been more acceptable, but it is so far beyond the hopes and expectations of the people, who hare been accustom' ed to the selection of officers of iufori or or mediocre capacity, that a univer sal feeling of relief will replace that of disappointment. As a member of the Geneva Conference, his course recommended itself to the approval of the country, and elicited the admiration of the world for the sagacity and erudition he displayed in assisting to effect the adjustment of differences betweea the two great English-spea- k ing nations of the world. The recent appointment of Mr. Cushing as minister to Spain, occa sioned much surprise, as being in commensurate to his great worth, and the President himself seems to have come to the conclusion, that a more generous tribute could be paid to the eminent statesman's merit, than the mission to a decaying third-rat- e power, now in the agonies of dissolution. The advanced age of Cushing will compel his retirement from the Bench in a year or two, under the provision of the law which governs in such a case, and brief as is the time allotted to him for wearing the honors of his exalted station, it will be marked as an era in the judicial history of the nation as brilliant as it was in its discover a fruitful subject for com palmiest days. plaint, but then with that class THAT SLANDEROUS grumbling is a chronic disease.
