Henry recently received a letter telling hira if he married a certain woman to whom he was engaged, his life would be taken. Chicago, 8. A Washington special says Carl Schurz has come back frem Europe well satisfied with the relative prosperity and discretion of America. He says that Austria is rotten; France haggard; Spain, hopeless; and North Germany debausbed with the sudden influx of money. Schurz left this morning for St. Louis. Old Mr. I)ent, the President's father-in-law- f is on his death bed. His demise will have' the 'effect of closing up the special festivities at the White House for for the winter. . An Inter Ocean special says, the news of the execution of Gen. llyan and several other Cuban officers, has not created much excitement. Ryan was generally regarded here as an adventurer of very small caliber, and one who was aa injury rather than a help to the Cuban cause. The "Virginius" is regarded at1 the State Department as in no proper sense an American vessel; and it seems certain that those who made her capture a pretext to try to involve our government in a war with Spain, will meet with very poor success. Both Gen. Ryan and Gen. Verona left for Cuba in pursuance of an orde,r printed here on the 3d of September, purporting to be from the President ef the Republic, directing the absent officers to return. The order was believed to be a forgery printed here. New Nork, 8. The strike of the laborers and bricklayers continues, the builders being unable to find a sufficient number of men willing to work.- In some instances substitutes for the strikers have been induced to leave woik by the society men. About five hundred men are employed, on the postoffice building, Vorking under the eight. hour law, and it is intended to keep the force up to this number during t!e present winter. ' " Boston, 8. ThC nail and iron manufacturers of New England will reduce the wages Of their empi'ovees ten per cent, on the first of Decemoei. Richmond, Va , 8. The obsequies of Mrs. Mary Curtis Leo, widow of the late General Robert E. Lee, took place to day in the memorial chapel at Lexington. Oer three sons, W. T. Lee, Curtis Lee and Robert E. Lee, and her daughter were present, besides a large concourse of frienu.H. The remains were deposited by the side of her husband in the memorial room. Mrs. Lee was sixty-seve- n years of age. Business here is entirely suspended, and many places are drared in mourning. ' FOREIGN. Kingston, Jamaica, 8. . The steamer "Virginius," after taking on board a large party of Cubans and some war material, cleared for Milan Bay on the 23d. The officers of custom examined the baggage of every passenger who. went on board, to provide against any irregularities or violation ojf law. The evening before the "Virginius" sailed a grand banquet was givei on board by Gen. Ryan, who was chief of the expedition An open boat with a party .of Cubans arrived at St. Ann's a few days ago. They wera two days on the way, and are bearers, they say, of important dispatches from Gen. Cespedes to the Cuban Consul in New York. Havana, 8. The following dispatch from General Burriel, commander of the Spanish troops at Santiago de Cuba, to Captain-GenerCorkins, was received: To bis At six Excellency the Captain-Genera- l. o'clock this morning were Ibot in this city, for being traitors to their eountry and for being insurgent chiefs, the following persons, styling themselves patriot generals: Bernebe Veroaas alias Bembetta, General of Division, Pedreo s, Cespedes, Commanding General of General Jesus Del Sol, and Washington Ryan. The execution took place in the presence of the entire corps of volunteers, toe force ef regular infantry, and sailors from the fleet. Au immense concourse-o- f people also witnessed the act, and the "best order prevailed. The prisoners met their death with composure. . S. There is no v ant in the not distant future which Las so forbidding a look as the increasing scarcity of timber. Our forests are not producing of the supply we are annually consuming or destroying. Mora attention should be given al once to its propagation and It was Slid by some preservation. tbnt he who makes two blades of grass grow where but one grew before is a benefactor to his race. If this be true, and none will dispute it,; how much more credit is due him who makes, a landmark by the cultivation of trees? Reference to this subject brings back to our loCollection a suggestion we saw some time ago in regard to a simple mode in which timber can be increased on those, tracts of land upon which it i3 being cut away. It is as follows: Plant the ground in the fall with acorns, black and white walnuts, buttcriiuts, the seeds of the ash, etc. The cuts should be covered lightly with soil and decaying leaves, so that boys and squirrels cannot find them. They will come up in (he spring, and if cattle are kept out of the woods as thev should be by all who would preserve the yeuug trees they will make a rapid growth, under the immediate superintendence ef Dame Nature herself, wlo has been pretty successfully engaged in this business of tree culture, more or less, ever since the Silurian age. In the same way cuttings may be put out in the timber in the spring. The mulching of the ground by the tailing of the autumn leaves is the best dressing that can be put around such young trees, which in a year or so will surprise you with their rapid growth. We would discourage no one who can do so from' planting out groves on the prairies, which is one of the very best works a farmer can do; but thcte hints carried out will enable many te utilize places now going to waste, and get a good return for their efforts. er In Chester and Lancaster ftnvrri) i the above, counties is, paradise. Pennsylvania is the State of barns. Think of a three-storstone barn, with a swell front and dormer windows in the roof, and a luxurious portico where the Sybaritic calves chew the cud of sweet contentment on summer evenings. And then behold the little cabin in the rear, where the agricultural Dutchman lives with his"frow" an! where the children lie on the floor and envy the happy calves in the lattice portico. Every barn is three limes as large as the bou6e, which serves as a sort of Appendage, and, as it were, plays second fiddle to it. Tue barn is headquarters, and the houss a sort of sentry-bowhere the man resides who takes care of it. The barn is slated, painted, corniced, cisterued, lightning-rodded- , and tle pig sty is glazed, the chicken-coop- s are painted, and the worm-fence- s are whitewashed as far as you can see. I hare no doubt the original dwellers here whitewashed the ground for acres around the domicile twice or thrice a year, till they learned its fatality. 'NOTICE.
