The chambers of commerce of Hob on yoke and Northampton are working a petition for legislative action looking to preservation of the ledge, by Its inclusion in the Mount Tom State Reservation. VANDALS FEARED Dr. Edward Hitchcock, late president of Amherst college, discovered the ledge, with its two acres or mors of reptilian, footprints, nearly 50 years ago. Some "of the finest specimens were removed and placed in the college museum, Easily accessible from the state highway, the ledge has been visited by thousands and it is desired to protect its markings from damage by vandals and souvenir hunters.. Prof. W.iJ. Miller of Smith collers footmarks, says that iie three-toe- d from three and four to 15 and varying 16 inches fn length, were made in d mud that hardened when the water receded. This was overlaid by sucperhaps thousands of feet deep Trlassic cessive deposits during the period, In succeeding geological; ages erosion of the overlying strata exposed the tracks again to the light. So perfect were the impressions taken by tfie mud that ripple marks left by the receding waters are clearly visible. FEW REMAINS FOUND Dr. W. I). Matthew, curator of the American Museum of Natural History. New York, believes the Connecticut Valley dinosaur footprints date back to the beginning of the age of reptiles. During the whole of this age, estimated at ten million years or more, the dinosaurs were the dominant land animals, as thejhigher quadrupeds had not appeared, in force. The dinosaurs are supposed tjj have disappeared eight million years ago. Relatively few remains have been found of the animals that made thes footprints.: Part of a skeleton. is preserved in the Yale museum and complete skeletons have been found in Germany. Remains of the dinosaurs of the later Creaceous period, larger and stranger looking than those of the Triassic, are less rare. Blood," adapted from Prosper Merimee's immortal "Carmen," which opened an engagement at, the Orpheum theatre last night. Pola Negri is seen In the role of La Carmencita, and this latest vehicle demonstrates that' this wonderful star from across the ocean Is an artist of the first rank. In "Passion," in which Pola Negri made her debut on the American screen, she was a marvel. In "Gypsy Blood,' she portrays the fiery little jcigaret girl as the role has never been portrayed before. if Twice before has "Carmen" been filmed, but the eye was not deceived then. .This time, however, a photo-dram- a XJ that deserves to be called an epic of the screen has been accompft lished. Pola Negri is a great emotional act- Fll ress. With fire and temperament the y Polish star throws herself into the so "that she actual-l- y part seems realistically to be living it. The triumph of the motion picture is shared by. Ernst Lubitsch, a wizard of production, who also directed Pola Negri in her previous success, and by the members, of the cast supporting the star.
