The campaign committee met yesterday afternoon with Mayor Francis and offered many suggestions for the solution of the problems of unemployment, and while no definite plan of action was adopted, the movement toward relief was begun. Mayor Francis asserted this morning that probably, the one thing which has caused the serious situation of here, as well as throughout, the entire country, was the retrenchment of business concerns which resulted In the laying off of men. .He declared that this action caused even greater business depression for the reason that the buying power of these men was suddenly eliminated through the cutting off of their earnings, which indirectly, effected the same firms which cut ther" from the APPEALS TO BUSINESS An. appeal was sent by Mayor Francis to all business firms urging that jnen be kept on the payroll as long as possible during the dull period even though the keeping may cause a temporary drag for these firms. Much 'would then be accomplished, he said, toward the solution of the unemploy-- j ment situation and no more recruits would be sent to the ranks of those without jobst The unemployment situation in Ogden was thoroughly gone over at yesmeeting and the findings were terday's not optimistic, to say the least. It was decided that an intense community effort was 'necessary to take care of the jobless within the city's borders. A report of the labor unions was submitted, stating that a questionnaire has been sent out to determine the number of men out of work and the condition of their. families. Captain Robert Henderson of the Salvation army offered. his services to g.o before the various civic organizations of the city to outline a, Rlan of relief. He suggested that a wood-yar- d be installed in the- - down-tow- n section where men may be given work. Through this, he said, the worthy men could be determined and placed in better positions. " George Crosby, labor representative appeared pessimistic over the outlook of unemployment, and asserted that in his opinion it would be a long period before conditions would brighten in an on industrial way. BRENNAN'S PLAN. The opening of municipal works to give men employment was favored by James Brennan, general manager of the Ogden Packing & Provision company. He also suggested that enlisting of assistance of all public organizations in the solution of the unemployment problems. A. L.
