"Our greatest service, however, has been to the disabled men and women and their families. Most of those who are receiving help from us at the present time were in ignorance of the fact that thev were eligible for vocational the training, and compensation from, were government. They knew there provisions made by the government for disabled veterans, but naturally in the line they assumed that disabled t of that one had beengassed or injured while on the battlefield, and though, they were suffering from after effects from influenza duo to exposure from which .they have never recovered, and were probably heart or lung trouble, .suffering from as a result, or had incurred tubercubroken arches,, or illness left losis, efrom contagious diseases, they did notrealize that they were considered disabled in line of duty. Many veterans have been living in rural districts, and were unaware that the government would be responsible for disaservice. bilities incurred while in the. most men to the fact that "Owing were discharged in 1919, who are now due. to applying forofcompensation, and time elapsed from date the length" ; of discharge to date of application, affidavits must be .procurred from physicians, employers and comrades in service, in order to prove that the 'i disability is of service origin or is greater than 10 per cent. No training or' compensation is awarded if the is- -' to be less than lability is determined 10 per cent. ' HELPS FAMILY. "Two months are allowed the government!: to consider the application, and owing to the fact r that most men . who apply do not do so until they are Unable to work or are only able to .work part of the time, or if the IT. S. public health physician to whom the man reports, places-hiin the hospital for an operation, medical atten-tid- n or observation, his; family is left without support until the government acts, which usually takes from two months to one year. In the meantime the Home Service provides a home for the family and the comforts the man needs while in the hospital,, together with all necessary correspondence in connection with his claim. "When the compensation from the government is finally awarded, the man' repays the Home Service, as he can spare the., money.' When vocational training is" given, 15 days elapse before the first pay arrives. Thus it is necessary for the Home Service to pay the railway . expenses for the wife and family to the place where the man is to taketraining, his transportation only, ber' AT rM em vera menL h After the family reach the destination owing to the ract that tne iamny are strangers in the community the rent, grocery and meat bill and all expenses must be paid in advance. This also is done by the Home Service, and is repaid as soon as conditions will permit. If the health of the man falls while he is in training, it is necessary for him to go to the hospital. His training pay then ceases and the government must be notified of the conditions before his compensation automatically begins again. This takes another month or so to get adjusted, when the family again la looked after by the Home I Service.
