GUILTY TO CHARGES E. A. Bacherd. former patrolman, started on his probable journey to the state penitentiary yesterday when he waived preliminary hearing before Judge D. R. Roberts of the city court. His intentions, it is reported,, are to go direct to the district court for trial, plead guilty, take his sentence, and start serving his time. His bail was fixed at $1000 by Judges. Robert p. The complaint against Bacherd was based upon his alelged entrance-intthe Russel & James store at Twenty-fourt- h street and Lincoln avenue. The defendant, who, while familiar wUh the police court, and who, on other occasions, had occupied the chairs reserved for arresting officers, looked crestfallen as he sat on the mourners bench, with a number of men on vag and drunk charges. He did not look up during the proceedings, not even at his wife and his father-in-lawho were seated opposite him. in the court room.' When Judge Roberts told the man that he had the alternative of securing counsel and having a preliminary" hearing, or going direct to the district court, for trial, Bachard responded in a voice scarcely above a whisper that he preferred waiving the preliminary. Chief of Police Jonatlian Jones said that Bacherd probably would not se cure counsel, but would go immediately to the district court and plead guilty. County Attorney David Wilson prepared the necessary papers, and it is anticipated that the trial of the former police officer will be held within the next few days.
