Show Relics of the Revolution. (Written for tbe Cincinnati Times. Morrlstown, N. T., Nov. 13. Not a little of the Centennial feelings about Morristowu and the instny treasured spots in the vicinity, hallowed by the occupation of Wash idgton and his army during our revolutionary struggle, when New York Ci:y was the objective point The people here are justly proud of the share their State had in the contest, and are behind none in their veneration lor tho relics of that day As you pa3 the green where vtaml the monument erected to the soldiers who fell in the rebellion, they arrest your atteation by pointing to an old fashioned' white frame church an J inform you it is. the one in which Washington attended divine worship. This church has often b.'en repaired and strengthened, but is now considered unsafe, and ii ready to be pulled down and the spot commemorated by a handsome and more substantial building. There is a tradition that when the head of; the army toolc sacrament here, thej crowd was eu great that it swelled outside aud occupied the green. Upon the inclosed space ulso stauds n cannon captured. from the British in that campaign. ' - I:',-- WASHINGTON' HEADQUARTERS. A little out from the city, or, rather, on its edge, is Washington's headquarters. It is quite a large, white frame house, but in its build; is substantial plain unrroun led by trees, aud in tbe about it stands some six or eiirht cannon. It is with a strange sort of feeling one outers the dwelling, and views a scene so fa'uiliar to the "Father of his Country" and the hard, determined veterans who surrounded him, aud were ready for the darkest hour: of our country's perils. What measures were discussed in these rooms; what plans laid hope aud fear alternating, as success seemed near as fur! How often has he paced theso floors in anxiety, or, perchar.ce, raising the blinds, gazed to where the camp fires told him his half fed, resolute little army lay, what tho morrow might of thinkiug bring, depressed but trustful. As much as possible of the old f is preserved. Here is his chair, also ene considered especially Lafayette's, an ordinary tplit bottom one. Here is the table side at wkich he ate, spindle-leggeboard which held his wines; the clock wbich ticked the hours for him; the maiUbags he used for his letters and dispatches, and a psalm bo A, out of which he sang with the name and date written in his owu hand, "George Washington, May 5, 1 790." There is also an ordinary small table on which he wrote bis dispatches, which is blurred with ink; the eecietary where he kept his papers; the bureaus which held his and Mrs, Washington's clothes, and the looking-glassebefore which they mada tSetr august toilettes. ' i There is a touch of nature man's nature natural depravity, it may be told by these last, which links the father of bis country closer with his kiud, than does all the stories we bear cf his travity and dignity. 1 always thought tho General endowed with a considerable portion of vanity, and a glance at these mirrors me in my opinion. That which reflected his ' uniform, and at which he arranged his powdered locks, is twice the size of the one used by his wife to adjust her pufl's and furbelows. This, taken in connection with the fact , that the first President was "several tirces rejected, just when he hoped to be blessed" is suggestive, at least to the feminine mind. I am glad that the little oblong glass, which no woman of this day would ondescend to uso as a reflector of her charms, has been preserved to bear its testimony to the want of vanity and self sacrifice of one woman f that day. Hiding along amid the gathering darkoesai and rain, after leaving the headquarters, it took but little imagination to fancy orjesself back in the days of the Revolution, and we almost expected to hear the sound of Iattring hoofs and : eo the , borne saa galloping; past from wood end mountain, bearing tidings of weal or woe to their chief. This property belongs to the State, it having been purchased "from its former owner, and proper persons placed on the premises to take care of it and keepjt in repair, whicl is We ascended beautifully (?Jrie. through the laTge garret to the roof, which commands a ffiew of many miles of the surrounding country. On thy little platform here, no doubt, Washington has often stood, glus.s in haad, taking obacrvatio' s of the situation. In one of the rooms hansrs a quaint old colored engraving, called" A mer ica." A card attached to it informs the visitor that this picture was sented to Gun. Washington when he sojourned here. Under the name is printed, ' To those who would sheath their swords in this war and grant " Thee peace to a divided people is a monument, on which is inscribed the names of" Warren aud Montgom' ery, etc. Bdf'ore this a brawny, dis beveled female is kneeling, while an equally brawny man and several other females bring up the rear. I hope General Washington sippreciated it. I did not. FORT NONSENSE. A little distance off is the remains of "Fort Nonsense," so designated by those who did not understand or appreciate Washington's policy of routing the evil one by keeping the army employed, mindful That Satan finds some mischief still For idle hands to do. had the The Command. soldiers quarry the mountain for stone, with whhh they afterward; built this fort. Its only available use being, that its erection occupied them and kept their minds from dwelling on the hardships of the situation, leaving little time for grumbling or mutinous action, if so disposed. In the woods hereabout are seen the remains of chimneys, also built by the army for convenience and comfort. PLOTTING TO SEAT half-clothe-d, ur-mtu- re d s con-firm- ed pre- HAYES. Tue forms of law having been ob served by the Returning Boards of South Carolina and Louisiana, by the Governor of Florida and the electors of those States, the action of the Republican majority of the Senate, and the Republican minority iu the House in declaring Hayes elected President will, it is expected, bo acqu'esced in by the people of the United States. The business interests of ihe couuiry will not suffer turmoil to ensue, aud alter a season of talk and threatenings the great body of the people will settle down to every day affairs, and say we can stand it for four years. This is what the Repablican leaders here profess to believe. If, however, there should be any disturbance, any attempt to resist tbe decision of the Republican ma jority of the Senato and the Repub lican minority of the House of Representatives, then the whole power of the Government wiH be exerted to crush it out. This, they say, will be quite easy. They do not apprehend any united action on the part of the Governors of New York, New Jersey, Conuecticut and Indiana. On the other band, the Governors of all the Republican States, they allege, will tender prompt assistance to the Precautions general Government. will be taken to have the militia of those States in readiness to be used 1 instantly. In a word, tho Republican leaders say they will have not only the army and navy of the general Government, but their friends throughout the North will be ready to respond. Jf there is any movement by the Southern S'ates, this will be denounced as a revival of tbe rebellion, and the loyal North will be appealed to to put it down. The Republican leaders here persist just as strenuously in claiming that they have a majority in the next House of Representatives, as tbey do in claiming South Carolina, Florida and Louisiana for Hayes and Wheeler. 5 - MVJ fM ?
