Show .yem An Ingenious Swindle. For ingenuity and bolJnosj com Vmed, St. Louia records an iohtaace which stands way up in the first part of the class. The swindle io ques tion was detected y by J, K. Cuur.mincs, proprietor of the St. Louis glass works. At an early hour this morning a youDg man of busi- eWlika air called at the house of Mr. Gumming. Next, the early a book. He forth visitor brought two and the book en?elopes p;ave the at the door, telling the servant to deliver the book to Mr. Cunimings and have him sign for the telegrams. As the telegrams were prepaid, he had no hesitation in signing on a page whero tho book was made to open by njcans of an elastic band. The numbers on the telegrams were written, and opposite, each of these numbers, further towards the edge f tho page, was a rectanglo inclosed in a black border, ot sufficient to admit a long signature. Over each of these rectangles was printed the word ''Signature" in large black letters. ill & y WcekIy,Semi-Weekl- Daily. er s.a:o as a Re- F.tid)ihe1 lets than threo ftresviitativs Fsper, plowed to main tain nail deft'nil ihe principles ami organization of n theKatiowil Kfpnblican l'arty.tbe in w ,u If punljeJ to the forefraot, of journ lim and acttierel a Buectfi unprecedented in the history of mich tuterprises. I'Kk-wea- .to-da- Mr. Oummings unsuspiciously wrote his parao within the firat rectangle, and was proceeding to do likewise in the one below, when ho noticed that that part of the paper touch ud by his pen appeared to move slightly, while the rest of tho leaf remained stationary. s This looked queer, and Mr. looked closer at the book and discovered an ingenious fraud. That part of the leaf which was inclosed in tho lower portion of the rectangles had been carefully and smoothly cut out, and with a white background it Was very difficult to discover that tho leaf was not perfects That part in the interior of the upper rectangle had been cut above and below, leav ing the ends intact, so that a piece ot paper could be slipped in through the (flit on one tide and, out nt the other, thus filling the space, with a counterfeit bUok for the, reception of the signature. A blank check of the Butchers' and Drovers' Bank, in which institution Mr, Cummings keeps his bank account,, had been Very ingeniously, folded and placgd under the leaf, so that while the liae for the signature of. the check came directly into the lower rectangle, the, other end of the check passed through the blips above, in such awayas.to present to the signer just that portion of tho cheek where an' endorsement is usually writteu., ;:j;f Yhcn.Mr. Cummings ijned the first blank he iudorsed tha chock, and had he signed the other he would havs.titen.his signature to tho check. Had the check been fastened by a little mucilage so as to keen its place, it i.s highly probable that tno discovery would not havo been made. Mr. t'umuiiugs, as Bon as he-- saw the fraud, ran to tho door asd called to the servant to hold the messenger for a moment till he" could get down, but the young man, who was of course oagcrly watching for any signal of dinner, dashed out iuto the street uod madj good his escape.
