He ordered Dau Horrigan, a white sailor, one day to stand aside from the rigging for botching some work, and gave him a push. Horrigan cursed the boatswain, and said that he would be square witi him. Later Sylvester Marks, a negro threatened Smith, and said that some morniug he would be found dead in his bunk. Ou the night of October 9, one of the seamen took a carpenter's hatchet from the tool room, and made his way to the house on deck where the boatswain slept. He struck Smith with the hatchet, but the blow was broken by a rope that was stretched from the berth. The hatchet cut Into Smith's right check.ahd made" a deep gash. The second blow was broken by striking the wood work above. This blow fell ou the back of Smith's head, and a third blow cut into his scalp on the top of his head. A fourth blow seems to have been warded off by Smith's hand, and the hatchet almost cut the hand from the wrist. The men who made the assault were not discovered. The Xeptune arrived in this port on Monday, and hid up at lier 21, East Jiiver, Brooklyn. The crew were discharged, and Smith sent to the Long Islaud .College Hospital The wounds on his head had begun to heal, but the hand had been neglected, and the arm, was mortifying. The physician said that death might follow the injuries, and amputation was necessary. Capt. Ferry sent fourteen officers to Cherry street yesterday, aud arrested twenty-fuu- r men. They were locked up in the Butler street police station. Tho Captain believes that Horrigan and Marks are the guilty men, and will detain them for the Uuited States courts, and will hold some of the crew as witnesses. N. Cupt.
