Alas for veils From the tiny in fant in the nurse's arms to the an-- 1 cient widow in her weeds, the whole ! se Jury Instructed. A case illustrating the uncertainty and defectiveness of criminal law was tried in the Oeueral Sessions yesterday. Erauk Mahon and Charles II, Eitch were at the bar to auswer an indictm nt for having been found in the night time in possession of burglar's tools. Mahon was re cognized as a youngster who was several months ago tried for burglary in the third degree, and who escaped conviction evidently through the sympathy exeited in the breasts of the jurors by the weeping of his stepfather cu the witness stand. A private watchman found him under the stoop of a house, and he and his conlederate were turned over to a policeman. They had u crow or jimmy and a skeleton key, and could give no satisfactory explanation as to what they were doing. After these facts were clearly proved, Assistant District Attorney Kollins rested his case, confident of a conviction. Then Mr. Kintxiug, the prisoner's counsel, startled the court by demonstrating that the indictment was fatally defective, because it did uot allege that the house where the prisoners were found was in the Nineteenth Ward,, which was the fact. Judge Sutherland told the jury that they must render a verdict of "not guilty," by reason of an informality in the indictment, which i something new in criminal jurisprudence. The general style of the architecture is simple and severe, each house being a large rectangle, built of white and blaek stones, and surrounded like a fortress with a ditch fed from a running stream. The mansions are the official resideucec of the daimius, who, 'during the continuance of the feudal system, were obliged to live in them one year out of every three, when they came to Yeddo to pay their homage to the Taikoon. There ft'erc eighteen daimios of divine de scent, three hundred and forty-fou- r created by the laikoons during the last two centuries, and nearly eighty thousand "Jiattamothos," or great captains and knights. On their t to Yeddo these daimios were accompanied by their harems, their official suites, and their troops. Each of them tried to surrouud himself with as brilliant a cortege as possible, aud brought with him from eight to nine hundred persons in his train. It may be imagined what a display of luxurious ostentation Yeddo afforded on these occasious, especially since it was the purpose of the Taikoon to stimulate each display, in order that he should, by eclipsing air his vassals maintain his ascendancy over them. vi-r- pivc the alarm.
