A large force of negroes, instigated, it is snid, by several white men, members of the Kellogg Legislature, armed themselves, took possession of the court house at Colfax, and erected barricades, from which they issued, plundering plantations, stopping steam boats for a supply of food, etc; Meantime the whiles of the parish began to gather at Colfax to consider what to do. They were joined by whites from surrounding parishes, and by Saturday there were 150 whites encamped around the court house at Colfax, in which were several hundred negroes, most of them armed with En field rifles. The white leaders of the negroes slipped on board a pacing steamer, on f nuay evening, anu weni to New Orleans out of. reach of danger. The firt fight occurred on Saturday. The whites, under command of Hadnot, a member of the fusionist legislature, were defeated, but there was no loss of life. On Saturday, at noon, the final battle took place. The barricades were stormed, the n groes driven into the court house, and the assailants, being unable to force in the doors, set fire to the building, and, as the negroes ran out to escape tHe flames, shot them dowa one by one, to the number of one hundred. Many others were wounded. The rest escaped, but were pursued by the whites. Ofthewkites only two were killed, including Hadnot, their leadar, and several were wounded. At last accounts not a negro had been seen in the vicinity of Colfax. San Francisco, l7. Hon. Amasa Walker delivered an address before the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon. He spoke against the introduction of paper money in this State, saying it would be profitable to only a few speculators, and that the rates of interest would adranae largely: He spoke in praise of the advantages if California, as an agricultural, mining, and manufacturing State.
