The case came up 'before the Court of Errors, anew trial was granted, and the case came up again last month, when he was again convicted of murder in the first degree. Columbus, Ohio, 2. Governor Uays issued a proclamation appointing the 80th of November as a day for thanksgiving and prayer. Chicago 2. and that if war comes, the Mormons will present a formidable frout, though it is not improbable that they may all emigrate to Mexico. It is slated that not twenty Gentiles in Utah favor the prosecution of the Mormons, and that even ihe Fedaral and Military authorities are indifferent to it on the surface, and at heart opposed to it. 'The. President yesterday appointed Charles C. Rearnon, of Boston, to be examiner of claims in the Stute Department. This is an important bureau office couuecled with foreign affairs. It is intimated that the appointment was uiatle to conciliate Sumner, who is a warm friend of Reamon's. In two or three casts where Secretary Boutwell has refused to pay audited treasury claims, a mandamus has beon applied for to the Supreme Court of this district. It ia understood that the Court will grant the writ, und thus compel the payment.among these claims is the Kentucky war claim. Z. the fruits of the orchards mouldered info dust, with the bloody debris of carnage. In this manner, no doubt, hss history repeated itself upon this land until desolation has claimed it for its own, and left it for centuries in posses slon of wild beasts and a few roaming savages. Nature, being uo longer moulded by the plastic hand of man, has put on her rough garb and suited herself 10 the times. Tho soil of Kanab is generally a sandy loam, of a reddish color, similar lo the hills from which it is formed. Iu many places the sand predominates so ns to very much increase the labor of traveling, and make a high wind very unpleasant. The town is laid out into blocks 32 rods square, with streets six rods wide. Each block contains four lots, intersected by a lane 16 feet wide, with the corrals of those occupying Ihe blocks in the centre. The two families occupying half of a block, are required lo build near the cor .ers formed by the street and lane. This brings the fom faniilios living on the contiguous halves of different blocks, in close proximity to each other, for mutual protection. The stock, being in the centre of the block, would make it more difficult to drive off, in case of Iudian raids. The locatiou of the corrals, so far from the houses, bus another great advantage in po nt of cleanliness. Kanab is located on a deep alluvial deposit, containing but little moisture for ten or fifteen feet below the surface. In digging a well recently, Bishop L Stewart found the offal of animals, and the roots of small plants, in a good state of preservation 25 feet below the present surface. The abundant remains of pottery, like that now used by the Moquis, goes to prove the truth of iheir traditions, that their fathers once occupied this country. Several vessels were dug up last spring, here in Kanab, in a perfect state of preservation. There was but little wheat raised here the past season. The other crops were eaten off twice by grasshoppers; still there is some corn, potatoes, beans &o., but the most of the grain for the supply of the settlers, until next harvest, will have to be hauled from the northern settlements. Our new friends the Navajoes evidently design to form a speedy acquaintance wilh us, as the arrival and departure of parties of them are of frequent occurence. Physically, they are fine spcoimens of manhood. They appear friendly, and their principal object appears to be to trade blankets for hones. I do not know of a case of dangerous sickness iu the settlement. It ia evidently a healthy atmosphere in this region; but the airy habitations, and plain diet of frontier settlers are, no doubt, very conducive to robust health. A copy of the Junction occasionally comes to hand. If those who abstract it from the mail, will send ine iheir address. I will see that they have a copy furnished them gratit, that I may get mine lo read. My kind regards to Ihe 'tatT of the Junction, and also to President Richards and family.
