PEN ROSE, Assooiatb Editor. Editor. OGDO, UTAH. Saturday Morning', Oct. 15, 1870. Honoring the "Proclamation." The following "true story" is too good the pa unrecorded, so wo place it on sacred pages of the Junction that it may not be loot to posterity: Tlie citizens of Cache and Rich Counties, it m pretty well known, have had a tough job in making a road through the mountains from Logan to St. Charles. When the work was completed, the leading men of Cacho County made arrangements for a pleasure party to make on excursion up the Kanyon, to view the road and the grand and romantic moun scenery through which the luvcly Logan river dashes and foams on ils way to the fertile valley of Cacho. A day was appointed and a largo number of ladies and gentlemen gathered, the ladies provided heaps of delicacies as well sub atantials to tempt the palate and Bustain the body, and the gentlemen brought an s as a protection abundanco of wild animals, which are by no against means scarce in the upper regions away from the settlements, and to show their skill in hunting for game. Just as they were about to start, a bomb shell drop ped into their midst and spread univer sal consternation, in the shape of Gov crnor Shaffer's proclamation prohibiting bodies of men t assemble with arms for any purpose whatever without an order, etc, etc., Here was a pretty fix for a loyal and peaceful body of citi-sewho delight to honor the law especially when it is constitutional, and who have great respect for dignitaries particularly when they respect themselves! What was to be dene? Theyeould aot safely gi unarmed and to forego the trip after such preparations was not to be contemplnted. A bright thought struck some genius whose imuie ought tu be immortalized in the oolumns of the Revolution. He suggested, as His Excellency had said nothing about armed women, that the ladies take the arms and the gentlemeu put themselves tinder feminine protection. The proposition was voted for by acclamation, and, it is ncodless to say, the excursion was a success, and ths gentlemen as well as their protectors returned unharmed. This is an important item for the "Woniens' rights" party, and a hint for those who go on mountain picnics. It is always delightful to see ladies in arm (providing it's regular and according to matrimonial law and Executive proclamations), and we oonsidor Cache valley entitled to honor being the first to takejan important step towards demonstrating the sphere of woman. .' " i' Jo fire-arm- fr Trying to ltelgn us Well as "Itulo." short time sine? we called the attention of Chief Justice McKean to the hioonvenienoe and expense entailed upon applicants for oitiienship residing at a distance by His Honor's arbitrary order concerning the notice and mode of application. We suggested to His Honor the propriety of reoonsidoringthis order, so contrary to the general spirit of U. S. Courts, which is to encourage and not prevent the naturalization of aliens. Rut his Judgeship has gone on from bad o worse. He seems determined to keep all unnaturolizod Mormons from enter ing the Union as eitizens. In the case of Sandbcrg, a Swede, he not only inquired if the applicant had mors wives than one, which was answered in the negative, but interrogated him as to his belief concerning polygamy. Sandberg replied that he believed it to be in accordance with the laws of God, wherupon Judge McKean refused his A ' application. In the caso of Horsley, who also stated in answer to a question that he had but one wife, the applicant very properly declined answering the Judge's enquiry as to his belief, when he also was rejected. Our Mormon friends, with whom polygamy is entirely a matter of religion, who have not yet obtained their papers, save themselves the trouble and expense of seeking for the rights of citizenship during the brief reign of the present judioial despotism. On Monday hist, ths Chief Justice read in court a lengthy opinion touching these eases, his chief point being that the Statutes at large require that, before admitting the alien to oitiienship, "it shall further appear, to thttat-itactio- n of tht Court, that during the five years of his residence within the United States "he has behaved as a man of good moral character, altachsJ to railroad gentlemen, who have already the left bund and drew a six shooter, OHieial Keport of the Small Vox. arrived by special train from the East: loaded and capped, with his right, Oliver Ames, Esq., Prest.
