To effect this salva tion, men and mouey were not wanting, tmi decisive resolutions and consecutive execution of the plans which the direc tory might lorm lor tho relief of the country irom invasion of the national defense. Wo are straining every nerve to arouse the country to a senso of its peril. Agents are abroad in all the armories of the world, and arms are being obtained from all the gun factories in Europe and America. But in the midst of all this activity, the distant provinces, unsullied by the foot of the invader, have abandoned theinselves to torpor; but this lethargy shall beshaken A great country will rise, niaicstic off. in her might, and inaugurate a national war. The autumn rains and chilling blasts will give immense trouble to the unaclimated Prussians, who will be decimated by hunger, and will fall an easy prey to the exegencies of nature. Their task of subjugation will prove a hard one to accomplish. A great nation of freemen cannot relinquish her place in the world, simply on account of a Foreign invasion. 500,000 men are massed within the walls of Paris who would rise, and rather seek death than submit to tho dismemberment of their beloved laud. In conclusion, M. Gambatta says, Paris affirms the universal sentiment of the French people, "Long live the Republic of Fiance, one and indissoluble." Amiens, 10, eve. Another balloon from Paris safely passed over the Prussian lines, bringing the following intelligence; The balloon left Paris last Saturday evening. The American Minister, Washburne, had entered strong remonstrance with the authorities against the outrage which had been committed upon the house of an American, who had the stars and stripes displayed for his protection. All the inmates of the house were arrested by the National Guard, notwithstanding the American flag, which was so prominent. The Governmental authorities, in response to the remonstrance of Minister Washburne, expressed regret at the occurrence, and severely censured the offending National Gtiards. The American General. Burnside. upon his late return from the Prussian head quarters, was thc bearer of a letter from Count Bismarck to M. Jules Favrc, the contents of which are not stated. On Saturday morning, Gustave Florcnx, at the head of ten thousand of tlm National Guard, weiit to thc Hotel de Villc, aud demanded, in the name of thc defenders of the city, the instant dis missal, from positions of trust aud emo lument, of allsuspected and the placing of the regulations for defence and subsistence in the hands of the Paris communes. The Governmental authorities refused to uccedo to these manifestations of dissent on the part of tho National Guard. The investigation of the letters of the late Emperor Napoleon reveals a number written to his early favorite, Miss Howard, afterwards (ho CoiiiitcH Beau regard, wherein it appears she received .luting one year and a half, the sum of five million, four hundred and forty-nin- e thousand francs. The Prussians have burnt the villaire of Abies, alleging, as a justification for thc extreme measure, treachery upon the part of the inhubiunU. before Metz, Prussian headquarters giving thc particulars of the failure of desperate attempts of tho French to hew their way through the northern Prussian lines on Friday. The German official reports assert that tho whole French garrison of Metz, led by Bazaiue, made a sortie on Friday night, attacking Gen. You Kaller's commaud, occupying an entrenched position above Woeppy. The French repeatedly assaulted thu Prussian centre, with desperate but unavailing impetuosity. They retreated at nightfall, leaving the field strewn with their comrades. The loss of tho Prussians is officially stated to be 600, while the French loss quadrupled this; 2,500 of their army being placed hors da combat. The German divisions are being pushed forward to the north of Metz. The enormous disparity between the aggregates of tho rrench and Prussian losses is accounted for, in the fact that the French acted entirely on the offensive, and were com pelled to charge in the teeth of the Prussian fire from the earthworks; conse quently the carnage was terrible. The Prussian loss was mainly sustained in the pursuit. Berlin, 9. A dispatch received in this city, reports that the fighting nt Metz, which had terminated on Friday, in the defeat the French, was renewed on Saturday, by tho French. The issue of the battle, had not been ascertained, but the whole Prussian force is represented to be moving to the north of Metz to check the advance of the French. The entire French army has moved without the walls of Metz, and are concentrated in tho Northern country. Acconnts have been received here of a battle which was foueht upon Friday near St. Hemy, in the department of the Voges. Tho'Prussian dispatches report that 14,000 French were in the field of Badely, and engaged the Prussians, the result of engagement is contested ; both sides claiming they have achieved a victory. They Prussians said they were triumphant, and that they captured six hundred t rench prisoners, besides inflicting disastrous havock upon the French. ' Reports of the fight received from French sources say that their forces were not defeated, nor did they sustain any considerable loss in killed or in prisoners taken but that upon tho contrary they held the battle field.
