I A Carter if Child' Finds Bomber Visit Intensely Moving, Satisfying 'Ex-Flow- er by Connie Stowe Burrup WEST JORDAN. rr" Crawling through the belly of a sprawling World War II listening to the wind rattle the riveted metal covering, I felt a little like I was "unstuck in time" to borrow a phrase from a Kurt Vonnegut novel. I edged toward the opening of the belly turret gun, pausing momentarily to peer through the sights of one of the machine guns mounted on the inside of the plane. Pid .people, really do this? ; L ' thought. How would anyone dare" Hy around in this thing? Having successfully abhorrence military. of anything passed vaguely This feeling, along with my professional objectivity, made for some unaccountable reluctance about this assignment. How very strange to conjure up the sights and sounds of real, breathing humans seated in the "chin turret" beneath the plane's nose waiting for the chance to "fire at the enemy." What is this weird fascination people seem to have with World War II? I wondered. Monte Tipton, operator of Skyhawk Aviation tried to tell me. "This brings back so many memories . . . almost like crawling back through time," he said. "Memories like Saipan and Taipei." His eyes seemed to have that same wistful look I'd seen on the faces of several of the "older gents" wandering around the airport surveying the Ghost Squadron's "static display." "We don't want to glamorize war," stated Col. Pete Bave, "we hate it. But instead of falling asleep in class you can come here and touch a piece of history. This is our way of showing appreciation for the many sacrifices made during World War II." wing Looking up at the spread of the Boeing "Flying Fortress," I noticed a seductive Betty Grable likeness etched on the outside of the cockpit. It occurred to me that people in my age group don't seem to have that same patriotic surge when pondering our own wars. World War II seem so uncomplicated, if that is possible. Hitler was so very evil and we seemed to be so very right in our efforts to cleanse the world of that terrible 103-fo- darkness. Such courage, such sacrfice. What I found during my airport t visit with the Ghost Squadron's flying museum was that I was absolutely fascinated and enthralled with what I saw and felt. ! I also realized that I had been in that deeply touched, caught up same spirit that emanated from the eyes of those old veterans. I pondered something Col. Bave had said in his introduction. "The Flying Fortress flew with a crew of I 10 men. Every time they went on a to mission they were given four one odds of returning. Technically, if you flew lout missions, you should., be "dead. That's why the completion of 25 missions was so spectacular," said Col. Bave. "These were very brave men," he added solemnly.
