Box 128, Midvale, Ut. 84047. Did you ever wonder how you can get a head cold when the outside mercury hits 90 degrees plus? It's because the weather has nothing to do with contracting a cold. The simple common head cold, called acute rhinitis is or coryza caused by many different viruses of which there are approximately 100. They are spread in the droplets of moisture that accompany a sneeze. In other words, it is an infection. A person with a cold is contagious for the first 2 to 3 days after the symptoms appear. The common cold virus attacks the mucous membrane of the nose causing swelling, redness, and pain. Because the nasal passage is so important to our sense of taste, we will often lose our sense of taste when we have a cold. This is because of the structure of the oral and nasal passages which are in close proximity to each other. . Symptoms of a head cold will include chills, slight fever, sneezing, runny nose, burning and irritated eyes, and possibly a headache. A sore throat is not a common symptom of a cold and is caused by a different organism. A cold will usually last from 6 to 8 days. People with colds are advised to cover both nose and mouth when coughing and try to avoid large crowds at least the first couple of days of the illness. When blowing the nose, the mouth should be open slightly with both nostrils open. This is to prevent the spread of the infection to the eustachian tubes. Bedrest is advised along with adequate fluids, aspirin if needed, and avoidance of chilling as this only tends to decrease the body's resistance to further infection.
