In the East Between makeup games and rain delays, three of the area's six American Legion baseball teams were forced to play four full games over the past week. Brighton had the most action, 5 being beaten by Hillcrest 10-Granite Monday, defeating Wednesday and Skyline also on Thursday, losing Thursday in the completion of an earlier game with Skyline, and falling to Alta 0 Friday. Hillcrest ran its record to 0 with victories over Brighton 5 East over Monday, 6 over Skyline Tuesday, 3 Granite and Wednesday, won of three Bingham Saturday. 8 four, defeating Cyprus 9 Tuesday, Monday, Tooele and South 1 Tuesday, but losing to Kearns 1 Friday. Alta opened its week with a 153 loss to Cottonwood Monday 2 then edged out Jordan and Brighton 0 Wednesday division, Brighton is sixth, Alta seventh, and Jordan ninth. In the West division, Bingham is fifth and West Jordan seventh. The top three teams in each division automatically get a state berth. Teams placing fourth through eighth will head to the Valley League tournament on July 30 to Aug. 3. The sites have not yet been announced. Two teams will advance to the state tournament scheduled for Aug. at Ken Price and Southridge Parks. Bill Robertson was the winning pitcher in Hillcrest's victory over Brighton. Shane Hudson had three singles, Robertson two singles and a home run, Alan Hoyne three singles and a home run, and Darin Vincent two singles. For Brighton, Chris Harrison had a two run homer and Chad Fife two doubles. Hillcrest's game with East was over in five innings. Hudson ended up with a triple, a home run, and a single; Steve Hansen a double and a triple, Shane Whetman a triple, Ron Anderson two singles, Hoyne a double and a single. Brian Miller was the winning pitcher. Hillcrest pitcher Jeff Koehler struck out eight Skyline batters and gave up six hits on Wednesday. The Hillcrest league" is to this expanding year include a new junior division for players from the high school freshman age group. Plans for the new division were first cleared Hillcrest through principal Delmar Schick and head football coach Jerry Simonson. The junior division team or teams, depending on the number of players signing up, will form the pool from which players will be selected for the Hillcrest High freshman squad. Youth Festival baseball tourney slated in Sandy As part of the Sandy Youth Festival from Aug. 7 through Aug. 11 there will be two baseball tournaments; one for 9 and 10 year old youth and one for 11 and 12 year olds. Each tournament will consist of 8 teams and will be double elimination. Brett McCleary had a double and triple, and Darren Jones a single and a double. Steve Estey was the winning pitcher, striking out six. after four innings, Trailing West Jordan finally broke the ice with a three run fifth. But, that was all the West Jordan rally could muster. Results in state softball play in ASA recorded Alta Valley, a team playing out of the Sandy area, placed fourth in the 15 and under state AJS.A. softball tournament held at the Cottonwood and Valley regional complexes on July 12-1- The next best finishes for local Claws plus a tie for thirteenth between the Sandy Beaches and Westvall. Beginning Friday, July 27, and continuing through Sunday, July 29, the Regional 18 and under tournament will be held at Sandy's Bicentennial Park. Five Utah teams, including the Heat Wave from Riverton and Sandy City, will be taking part, as will six teams from Colorado. Mark Gorringe finished with 12 strikeouts. against Brighton was down Skyline after five innings, but in the final two periods Brighton exploded for 15 runs, Gary Hildebrandt, who ended up with 10 strikeouts, kept the Skyline offense in check while Chris Harris and Chris Long went three for four, Robbins two for three, Townsend three for four, and Rich Goodrich two for three at the plate.
