His work will be on exhibit at American Fork High School as part of the Pageant Youth Art Exhibit until July 20. David is the son of Paul W. and Lily Vance Jacobson. He is a recent graduate of Hillcrest High and will attend Utah State University this fall. He was presented with his cash award and a personal letter from of congratulations Governor Scott M. Matheson, who was slated to present the award in person but was called out of state on unexpected business. Ray Kingston, chairman of the Utah Arts Council, made the presentation on behalf of the governor and commended David his outstanding accomplishment in art. David placed in "pen and ink' ' and "painting" competition in the Jordan District Art Show held earlier this year. He was selected to receive the Superintendent's Purchase Award and was the Sterling Scholar in Visual Arts for Hillcrest High this year, winning honors as a state finalist in that competition. He has exhibited in the "All State High School Art Exhibit" held in Springville and his work in that show will now go on tour. David has been active in work and has community contributed much art work to school publications. Funding for David's scholarship came from the Utah Pageant of the Arts Guild, who conducted the 1984 pageant scholarship competition for all Utah seniors interested in furthering their arts education. There are about 20 college scholarships specifically for in the state along with dozens of others available through national competition, Olson says. There are also numerous trips available through at low cost, he says. Project winners in are eligible to win trips to Chicago to compete in the National Congress, there are leadership training workshops held in Washington, D.C., and at Lake Tahoe and there are even for opportunities foreign exchange programs. Olson says each year Utah plays host to Oriental exchange students and every other year Utah travel to Japan. He says this summer three girls are participating in an exchange in Denmark.
