Have you ever thought about why you are able to stand erect and not fall into a heap? It is because we have a marvelous framework or skeleton that is giving us support. As adults, we have 206 bones that make up our skeleton. Babies have 270 because some of their bones have not yet fused or grown together. Most of our bones come in pairs or groups we are because basically symmetrical from side to side, There are four different types of bones found in the body. They are classified according to their shape. Long bones are in the arms and legs, short bones are in the wrist and ankle, flat bones are in ribs and skull and irregular bones are facial and spinebones. The skeleton has other besides functions support. Internal organs are very delicate and need protection. For instance, the ribcage protects the heart and lungs, the skull protects the brain. It is interesting to note that the spherical skull is one of the strongest shapes possible, able to withstand heavy blows, from falling particularly objects. Bones allow us to move because of the joints. There are different kinds of joints and some allow back and forth movement in only one direction such as the kjiee joint, which is called a hinge joint. Another one is called the ball and socket joint because it allows more freedom of movement such as in the shoulder. Tendons, ligaments and muscles which are the initiators of movement will be discussed later. Another vital function of bone is the formation of blood cells. This takes place in the ends of the long bones of the arms and legs, in the breast bone and ribs. As long as we live our bones live. As a matter of fact, about 5 percent of old bone is being replaced yearly by new bone. This process slows down in the elderly. Besides being very strong, our bones have to be light enough for us to be able to move around. This is possible because they are essentially hollow, with the exception of nerves, blood vessels and bone marrow contained inside. Our bones are made up mostly of calcium and phosphorus. This is what builds the bones. Calcium also gives the bones a very tough hard, outer layer. An inner layer, called spongy bone because it looks like a sponge, helps the bone to be both light and strong. The bones are truly a wonder of creation in the earthen vessel.
