Show THE SENTINEL Page 2 Thursday, May 17, 1984 'J While there may be many causes for low back pain, the most common is probably muscular sprains and strains. Dr. Thoen continues, "It is reasonable to expect that with as many people as will be helping with this effort, all working Easy hints can prevent backache for sandbaggers With continuing concern about heavy runoff this spring, activities are sandbagging moving ahead full speed. While this preparation may prove helpful in controlling water, it may also prove painful the next day for volunteers taking on the task of filling hundreds of bags each day - unless they use common sense and good in practices lifting. There is a proper and painless way to shovel and stoop to fill and pick up sandbags, according to a Salt Lake Neurological Group that sees many back pain problems among their patients. has "Springtime always meant working in the soil for many Utahns," says Dr. Dennis of D. Thoen Western Neurological Associates. "But this year the shoveling required to fill and lift sandbags could lead to backaches. Because so many of the people who will be rallying to help with the sandbagging do not do this type of physical work on a daily basis, they may not realize there are ways to avoid these problems," he adds. "Shovelers should limber up before starting to work. Work is exercise and as with the exercise we do to become more fit, work is easier to accomplish and easier on the body if we stretch to prepare for it," he says. Such preparation before lifting can go a long way in avoiding the temporary aches that may follow work. Thoen Dr. continues, "Those people really interested in avoiding the temporary aches that may come with either sandbagging or working in their gardens will realize that the key to avoiding pain is to keep physically fit, through activities like walking, hiking or swimming." Walking is excellent for total body fitness. down and bringing Sitting your knee bent up to touch your chest, one leg at a time is one good preshoveling or lifting exercise, Dr. Thoen notes. Here are some tips to help avoid backache. 1. Avoid uncontrolled jerking or heaving when lifting. Make sure you are in complete control of the lift at all times. 2. Don't lock your knees. If kept slighly bent, the knees act as a shock absorber. 3. Let your body weight help you lift. 4. Stand properly, as close to the object to be lifted as possible, with your feet around it, rather than off to one side. 5. Keep your back straight when lifting and lift with your legs. 6. Grip your load firmly. 7. Keep the load close to your body as you lift. 8. Don't twist when lifting - lift into or walk into the direction you want to go. 9. Prepare yourself, by stretching before you lift. 10. Stoop down, bending your knees not your back, rather than bending over at the waist. 11. Let your shovel handle work for you as a lever - don't pick up the load any higher than you need to to unload the shovel. 12. Avoid lifting heavy objects alone, get help if needed. When pain does occur it is usually in the lower back. The lower back, or lumbar area of the spine takes most of the pressure and weight of the entire body. "As we go throughout routine work, this area is often on the receiving end of tremendous pressure and that is multiplied as one moves the weight out from his body," Dr. Thoen notes. sand-bagge- rs quickly to achieve a higher output production, strains could occur." Back pain and injuries occur for some 80 percent of this country's population. Reports list back injury as the second most frequent injury in Utah. Far too often, however, sufferers from backache feel that this type of injury means a negative change in lifestyle. It should not. Often conservative care and physical therapy, along can help with education, sufferers to overcome the pain while conditioning their bodies and minds to allow for' meaningful activity to continue. These principles are the reasons behind Western Neurological Associates expansion of their neurological practice to include a Spinal Center. It incorporates the recognized expertise of neurologists, physical therapists and rehabiliative counselors to quickly return the back patient to playing an active role in society.
