When this blood flows into the kidneys, it goes into tiny blood vessels called capillaries which are arranged in clusters or small balls. These balls, barely visible to the naked eye, are enclosed in a double membrane and lead to a tubule, or a little tube. Together, the and membranes clusters, tubules are called a nephron. Just imagine! There are more than a million in each kidney! It is estimated that if the tubules were straightened out, they would reach approximately 50 miles! By the time the urine leaves the kidney it has gone through filtration different several processes in the nephron. Much of the blood's fluids, containing useful substances as well as waste products, filter out membranes the through mentioned above. From here it goes to the tiny tubules which returns to the blood stream that which is reusable (recycled!), and keeps the waste products Through chemical trapped. action, sugars, salts and other vital substances in the tubules the bloodstream to supply the body's needs. The body filters about 42 gallons of plasma everyday to produce the final volume of urine. This plasma soaks into the tubules to help dissolve the waste products. Ninety-nin- e percent of it is reabsorbed into and the bloodstream the remaining one percent along with the waste is changed into urine. This amounts to about pints a day. Of course, the amount of urine excreted daily varies with how much we drink and how much we sweat. If the waste matter produced by our bodies were not removed, we would die. This is one of the most important functions of the kidney, the major organ for the removal of waste. The kidneys are called such because they resemble kidney beans in shape. The average size is approximately 4M" long, wide and about 1" thick. The left kidney is usually slightly larger than the right. There are normally two of them located one on each side of the spine against the back abdominal wall, just above the waist line. The right kidney is displaced slightly lower than the left because of the liver. The method the kidney uses to clean the wastes from the bloodstream is a miracle of ingenuity by our Creator.
