Huskies, Bengals win two in league basketball openers Hillcrest and Brighton Highs notched two wins each in the opening week of Region Two boys' basketball, the Huskies 9 whipping Taylorsville Tuesday and Kearns Friday, while Brighton ripped Kearns 5 Tuesday and nosed out Alta 9 Friday. West Jordan opened with a 8 whiteknuckler over Alta Tuesday and Bingham edged 7 Taylorsville Friday. Jordan, over in Region Six of also got its league season off on a winning note, blasting Brighton leading 5 and at the quarters. Then the Bengals outscored the Cougars in the third period. 1 Though the Brighton-Alt- a game Friday got a bit ragged at times, it lacked nothing for excitment and action. Both teams played furious defense at times and the game was through the first half, Alta leading at the end of the first period and Brighton in at the half. By the end front of the third period, however, Brighton, paced by good shooting at the foul stripe, edged in front Alta kept the pressure on and it wasn't until the final two minutes or so that the Bengals were able to stretch things out a bit. Schreiner again led Brighton in scoring with 17 points followed by Reid with 14 and Brown with 10. For Alta, Troy Long had 19 points, Derrick Bryan 17, and Doug Boudreaux 10. The West Jordan-Alt- a game went down to the final seconds before being decided. The Hawks led at the half and the contest was tied at the end of three quarters. West Jordan managed a three point, lead with six seconds left then gave Alta an uncontested basket at the buzzer.
